Comment:
80 minutes of a band that, until recently, I had always dismissed. Then one day I heard "Soul Sacrifice" in someone's car (for the first time in years)... and then I read the piece that MOJO wrote about the original line-up... and, after reconsidering my position on the first three albums (the only ones with the original members), I got copies from the mixer now known as FRBR (thanks again, my friend). This mix is the result. I still don't love the band, but I like all of these songs and love a few of them. The mix is primarily instrumental because it's Carlos' guitar sound, coupled with fantastic percussion from Mr. Shrieve & Co., that appeals to me most about the band; I could definitely live without Gregg Rolie's vocals ("Black Magic Woman" was included DESPITE my loathing his vocal because the guitar work is so lovely) and without the somewhat (IMHO) sub-par songwriting. Last track cut: "Fried Neck Bones & Some Homefries." At some point, I'll get around to making more of a "mix" out of this and getting the songs out of chronological order.Feedback:
Santana has always been one of my favorite bands/guitarist for a long, long time. You should also check out the Lotus album, which is the live, mostly nonvocal, in Japan which was only available for years as an import. Also, our favorite slow dance Santana song, apart from Samba Pa Ti, is Europa. Wonderful guitar work. The later remasterings of the first 3 albums also contain extra live tracks which are great. I want him to do a collaboration album with all the great Spanish rock bands instead of the fairly current pop stars.
The first time I ever heard or heard of Santana was at festival concert at Atlantic City Race Track in 1969. I went out and got that first album immediately afterward and that group of three albums between 1969 and 1971 were killer and I'll always love them all. However, over the years it has been the 2nd set of three albums Caravanserai, Welcome and Borboletta with their Coltrane and jazz influences that spent the most time on my turntable during the 70s. And of course the 3 record live Japanese import Lotus which I had to have. Other albums over the years have had their moments and Europa is also one of my favorites but the 2nd trilogy to me is Santana at their best and their live performances during that time were truly awesome. This mix is a great introduction to the formative years of Santana.
Man, I love some of these and i grew up hearing them.
If one must listen to Santana (I think I need to hear them again as well), I think you nailed the songs to listen to.
Nice! Dont like all Santana's stuff but here is lots of good ones!
I saw them in concert in 1984 supporting Bob Dylan, and liked them for a while. I don't listen to them much these days, but when I do, it's always enjoyable. Nice mix, Rob.
