We all remember that A.R. Rahman bagged the Oscar® in 2009 for the exuberant “Jai Ho,” but that same year he was also nominated for [i]Slumdog Millionaire[/i]’s “O . . . Saya,” a collaboration with M.I.A. Frank Sinatra generally got his own way, but even a gorgeous rendition of “I Fall in Love Too Easily” from 1945’s [i]Anchors Aweigh[/i] couldn’t secure the big prize — perhaps not surprising in a year when 14 songs were nominated in the Best Original Song category (in ’46, the tally was reduced to the now-customary five). And even though “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow” from [i]A Mighty Wind[/i] was intended as a parody, it still had charm enough to reckon in the running in 2003.
