Comment:
Side 1)3) Written in 1878 by Liliuokalani, the last reigning Queen Of Hawaii, adapted & arranged by The King himself.for an Elvis movie in which Elvis plays beach bum Chad Gates, this is curiously reverential and though clocking in at just under 2 minutes, Elvis allows vocal group The Surfers to lead, adding his trademark `Elvism' at the song's climax. And I guess that's what most ladies wanted - Elvis there at the climax.
5) Brazillian stores don't carry any titles by Wilson Simonal, a singer who died blacklisted, accused of being a police informant. Others prefer to attribute his ostracism to racism.
6) Formed after listening to, yup you guessed it, The Beatles. If pushed, I'd say this one is more Paul than John but I'm no Beatles expert so for all I know this one might be more Ringo than Paul.
7) If deep soul had an equivalent in Reggae then it's Dawn Penn's No No No, a mournful fuck punctuated by a stabbing brass - pretty? no, but an essential accesory in the annals of hurt.
10) Instead of I don't know Karate but I know Ka-Razy, I thought James was singing I don't know Karate but I know Koran. And on reflection I think my version is best!
13) In the 90's, while living in Sydney, I did a writing course with Merenia, part Maori, who had been involved on the soundtrack for the internationally acclaimed New Zealand movie Once Were Warriors. We sat at the back passing rude notes to each other about our fellow class mates & sharing M&Ms. Just today I scoured the net for her and discovered she scooped an award for Best Newcomer in the New Zealand Music Awards.
14) India's most respected composer interpreted by U.S. musicians & sung by the London born/ Indian superstar.
Side 2
2) Garage beat Italian style!
7) Austin was, or so he boasted, the first Cajun accordonist who played standing up. What? So he suddenly kicked away the chair and said `Chairs are for sissy! I'm standing up!' The music's a joy, though.
9) Australia's Tindersticks and imho just as good.
10) (Akin to The Blues, Rai.'is a rejection of taboos in a society of traditions') Nakhla is 7 minutes of searing `Massive Attackesque' menace delivered by the 70 yr plus Godmother of Rai.
11) Natacha is a Muslim with Jewish roots. `Jews have always been part of Arab society, so it's not so unusual for someone to find out that they have Jewish blood. At the end of the day, we really are so connected.' Though I love Natacha's thang, a whole album is akin to visiting one Golden Temple after another, but as a Jew myself I find listening to her fusion of roots make this `connection' deliciously tangible.
13) Verve's back catologue squeezed through the sphincters of various knob (head) twiddlers in an exercise to prove their back catologue is valid to the kidz! The results are more fizzle than sizzle..(Billie Holiday accompanied by a loop of kidz farting in a bath) each over-priced volume (can't be arsed to date the originals) contains at least 2 tracks that deliver in spades.
