Comment:
This mix is similar to the PiL mix that I just posted: Pere Ubu, like PiL, were absolutely, earth-shatteringly, mind-bendingly great for the first couple of years of their career, so much so that 15-20 years of sporadically good but ultimately disappointing releases (although I'm less familiar with Ubu's remaining oeuvre than I am with PiL's) cannot diminish my enthusiasm for the band. So here it is, my favorite tracks from Pere Ubu, 1976-1979. Event though there isn't a ton of material to choose from, almost every song is great, so cuts were tough, and it hurt to edit the first 1:45 from "Laughing" due to space considerations. Last track cut (with GREAT difficulty, because I really love it): "Sentimental Journey."Feedback:
Classic stuff. Dub Housing was one of my favorite albums for many years. I've been coveting their Datapanik In The Year Zero box set for ages.
I must admit I only know tracks 1 & 9 but I've always been interested!
Gotta check 'em out, once more. It's been a long time.
Hey Rob, friend, 'o pal. How about we work something out for this?!
I agree. Pere Ubu is great one, and this really looks good.
I'm drinking a beer, enjoying perfect beach weather in Michigan and digging this mix. Eat your heart out everyone.
Thanks for the copy of this, Rob. I enjoyed it far more than expected; maybe first hearing them twenty years ago on beat-up vinyl gave me an unfair impression, as they come across as less off-putting than I remembered. I'd still group them alongside, say, PiL and Mission of Burma as challenging acts I prefer in small doses, but, per usual, your skills at culling highlights gave me newfound appreciation for the band. Incidentally, I remember picking up the relatively lame Cloudland reunion album a decade ago; it's long forgotten, but the single "Waiting For Mary" was the sort of pop song I can still hum with ease.
"The Modern Dance" is a truly great album. Sadly, I don't know much of their material past that.
NICE! great beggining and inclusion of caligari's
Ha! Apparently we're on the same wavelength in terms of Ubu songs we adore. Honestly, I was kind of dismissive upon first hearing them, but after finding the Datapanik box set (in its entirety!) in the used bins a few years back, I dove in and came out with an ardent love for Thomas and company. "Street Waves" is now a high-ranking personal fave. Awesome stuff!(I also hear rumors that the soon-to-be released album is some of their best work in a long, long time....)
