Linda Blair: Daughter Of Frankenstein
Comment:
Nothing better to do today while fighting a nasty head cold than to take a shot at the latest Frankenstein mix. I took the liberty of rearranging the categories for the most ear-pleasing results.01 first AotM trade-Not only from my first swap partner, but also by him. DJ Zeus where'd you go?
02 his name is my name too.
03 remind you of your first relationship-David Bowie's Heroes was my first pick since my copy of that LP somehow morphed into her collection, but having never bothered to replace it I was left with the crappy single version on Changes. Catching The Damned live was an early date & this song in particular was a crush-mix fave back then as well.
04 summer song
05 year you graduated HS-Hard to pick just one tune from this amazing year, but the DK's first LP probably spent the most time on my turntable in `81. Their weekend stand that fall at C.O.D.s & O'Bannions with Husker Du, Strike Under, Effigies & Naked Raygun opening was a life changing event for me as well.
06 B-side-Flip to How I Wrote Elastic Man & my introduction to this wonderful & frightening band.
07 song in a language you don't speak-This along with Killer Man by Gasoline are my argument against anyone who says the French don't rock.
08 last CD you bought-The Ponys' Celebration Castle
09 7th song-It may be the seventh tune on the CD, but it will always be the third cut on side two of Raw Power to me.
10 cover you like more than the original-Hard to declare which of the dozens of covers of this standard are best, but this proto-metal version from '66 by these Pittsburgh freaks puts it over the top for me.
11 under a minute-0:50 of bliss.
12 with handclaps
13 live version better than studio version-Not that the studio version isn't a nice cool down from the speed-freak skank that precedes it, but this maniac version from the Specials AKA Live EP puts the biting cynicism right up front where I like it best.
14 instrumental
15 genre you don't usually like-I certainly wouldn't say I dislike hip-hop or turntablism, but I don't buy very much of it due to the low ratio of good to bad cuts & the immediately dated production styles. Shadow has enough record-geek in him though to make me want to listen to him for years to come.
16 sexy-Pretty obvious what's going on here.
17 first or most recent artist paid to see live-That would actually be Alice on his '77 tour for Lace & Whiskey. Great as he always was live, his theatrical LPs don't hold up so well so I went back to the last decent thing he did before that.
18 Beatle-esque-Local fabsters. Watch for their major debut coming soon.
19 title is a question
20 make you want to cry-Marie is only six years old! Gets me every time.
21 old song you've only JUST heard this year-Thanks Rob! Sorry that it took Kevin Coyne's death to get me to finally check him out.
22 best song from your favorite band's worst album-Well, The Stooges never put out a bad LP (yet) & the Stones have too many to try to pick just one. Had some difficulty deciding which was the tragic band's worst outing, Unconditionally Guaranteed or Bluejeans & Moonbeams. The latter's fate was finally sealed at Happy Love Song.
23 if your life was a TV show this would be the theme-`nuff said!
24 Had to throw this one on here. Sure there were early crushes on various TV characters (Cat Woman, Agent 99, Trixie from Speed Racer), but starring in the freakiest of horror flicks made my fifth grade heart swoon for this queen of trash. Made for TV teen alcohol & woman in prison flicks along with a cocaine bust had me fantasizing about movies we could make together for the next few years.
Now, taking a pinch outta Ion Moe's stash, how about a quiz. Can anyone tell me which classic LP I stole the cover layout from?
Feedback:
Lookin' good, although I don't really get the Linda Blair appeal. Glad someone is taking liberities with the song order (can't really see how you can keep to the order without some real jarring transitions). And I think I'd need to hear the evidence of the French really rocking (other than Mano Negro which is mostly Spanish anyway, I haven't heard any real rocking French bands).
well now You started something again, a real monster I suppose, very good idea, in a couple of days I will probarbly have done one
metal Urbain, Starshooter are two great french band BTW
I think I should recognize that cover, BTW did Rob give you Kevin Coyne ?
Nice one, Jim. Gotta give this a shot later on.
Well done, "James" - plenty of imaginative picks here.
Great picks. I've got to do one of these, as well. And yes, Peter, I dubbed him some Kevin Coyne stuff after you sent me your fantastic mix.
that's ok Rob, we doing this for the love of music
I like it.
Hey! Get your hands out of my stash! This mix has my head spinning. Plenty of great stuff that fits the criteria. Hope you excorcise that head cold. Wish I knew the answer to the quiz. Are you offering a free copy to the winner like I always do?
Great lookin' mix!
Awesome cover art!
my single with Jimmy Bo Horne . Dance across the floor are pretty close to the art work (minus Linda blair of course)
Very cool. Great cover too.
