Comment:
This is a collection of operatic excerpts featuringfemmes fatales in lethal moments. Info in [brackets]is the composer
and title.
As you can imagine from the scene descriptions, these
excerpts tend to occur at intense points in the drama.
In fact, if you are not accustomed to opera, a lot
of it may sound like screaming.
Six of the tracks are in English. The rest are in
French, German, Italian, Russian, and Czech.
If you listen closely you can hear some useful phrases,
such as Salome demanding "Gib mir den Kopf des Jokanaan"
("Give me the head of John"), Boris calling Katerina
"slyukha" ("slut"), and Tosca's famous
"Questo F il bacio di Tosca," (since she had led him to
be expecting a smooch, not a stab).
OK, OK, I know there is hardly any classical music on
AOTM. And when there is it's like *never* opera.
So if you have even read this far, you have my sincere thanks.
But do note the presence of several composers from
outside the standard rep. In opera circles this is known
as "indie cred," ha, ha.
There will be no references to "The Sopranos."
However, if you are familiar with the operatic conventions
around voices and characterizations, you
could correctly guess
that almost of these singers are indeed sopranos.
Feedback:
This is great but why oh why did she have to poison the mushrooms?
I know nothing about this but you've presented it in a way that makes it sound very interesting (and, yes, I read far enough to be thanked).
Very interesting. Loved the comments explaining the action. Don't know much about it myself, though I know a few fanatics. Thanks. Would this be a good introduction to opera?
Great idea!
wow. very amazing mix, good job here.
Very nice and a wonderful idea. Particularly love the Puccini. Congrats on the MOTW.
What a great name "Tormentilla" is! I'll have to use that on one of my cats. That Berg is a tough listen. Renata Scotto! Joan Sutherland! Going for the classic ladies here. A terrific complilation! My compliments.
great mix! nice to see some classical on AOTM. but no Medea?
Damn! This looks glorious. Do you want to trade? My two Hot Hot Mezzo Lovin' CDs are almost all opera (a skosh of sacred stuff), and my Countertenor, Cornetto, and Opposite of Cough Drops mixes are relatively indie, as these things go. I'd love to hear this, if you're willing.
WOW! Infuckingcredible!
yup,i do love the pillows.
This is fan-fucking-tastic. How did you get the clips?
Hey Mixxer, thanks for pointing me in this direction. This looks fabulous. Now that my dark secret is out, I feel ready to shower you with the rice of respect for this well-crafted opus. I would be happy to hear it -- unlike Claude Debussy, who is reputed to have said "In opera, there is always too much singing". Waddya gonna do?
I saw one of these scenes re-enacted on stage last week (there were posters announcing "Tosca - as heard on Mixxer's famous Divas With Daggers compiltation"! Well, at least there should have been...) and it reminded me that I never did leave a comment on this one. Terrific mix, of course. I have to admit I can't get into that Leos Janßček track at all (too bombastic for my tastes - although I might have to give one of his full operas a shot at some point anyway, because I'm actually quite fond of his string quartets and what I've heard of his piano music), but I really enjoyed everything else here. Great blend of different periods and styles, and your opera indie cred is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
