Comment:

This mix is in honor of the best movie I saw in 2004. I knew going in that Garden State was acclaimed. I had high expectations for it, yet it still was better than I'd suspected. Unlike most movies in 2004, this one really moved me.

A crucial part of Garden State was the soundtrack, and Zach Braff nailed it. Not only did he use the soundtrack to make each scene more precious, he helped many of the bands reach a wider audience. I think it's a testament to the power of a great mixtape.

After I saw the movie, I felt compelled to recreate the soundtrack's mood and feel, but to do it using artists not found on the soundtrack. Like the original soundtrack, this mix is 13 songs long, and I allowed myself to include two tracks from a single artist/band (to mirror the double dose of The Shins).

For a quick comparison, here's the tracklist to Garden State's soundtrack:

01: Coldplay- Don't Panic
02: The Shins- Caring Is Creepy
03: Zero 7- In the Waiting Line
04: The Shins- New Slang
05: Colin Hay- I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You
06: Cary Brothers- Blue Eyes
07: Remy Zero- Fair
08: Nick Drake- One of These Things First
09: Thievery Corporation- Lebanese Blonde
10: Simon & Garfunkel- The Only Living Boy in New York
11: Iron & Wine- Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover)
12: Frou Frou- Let Go
13: Bonnie Somerville- Winding Road

Note: Since the time I made this mix, The Pale changed their name to The Pale Pacific (to avoid a copyright lawsuit).

I'm not sure if the Ben Taylor Band will "change my life." but this looks good -- expecially the Cyrkle and VG. If Braff does a sequel, you guys should hook up.

Nice songs, and I loved the film too - but why no Shins tracks? ...after all, they are what the lovely Natalie Portman was listening to on her head phones!

Thanks everybody. Wildheartedoutsider: I didn't use The Shins because the challenge was to recreate the soundtrack's mood and feel, but to do it with artists not found on the soundtrack. The Shins, of course, are well represented on the original soundtrack.

Yeah sorry - I misread it as 'songs' not on the original soundtrack. Oops!

Very good mix! The original soundtrack is one of my favourite cds, and you did a good job in the recreation.
