Comment:

I'm re-submitting this mix, albeit in revised form, after four years. (I'm keeping the old version up for a couple of days so Radio Sally can get the track listing, as I just sent it to her.) I've often said that, for the most part, Pavement were the band that were tailor-made for my particular strain of record geek: the band struck the perfect balance between pop and noise, Mr. Malkmus was both a great songwriter (although I can't vouch for his new album one way or another, I thought his other two solo records were dull, dull, and more dull) and the perfect anti-frontman, and I have to admit that I'm a real sucker for the drumming of Gary Young on the early records. I think that I was either the perfect age for them or they happened to arrive at exactly the perfect time in my life: Slanted & Enchanted was released near the end of my junior year of college and really struck a chord with me, pretty much encapsulating exactly what I was looking for in music at that stage in my life. To me, they were not only the greatest band of the '90s (if the Mountain Goats, who are John Darnielle in all but name, qualify, then I might amend that statement), but also the most *important* band of the '90s (at least in terms of influence on bands that I love). I'll be revising my old second volume of this in the next couple of days, as well. Btw, I'm kind of bummed that nothing from Brighten the Corners made the cut, because I do like the album (just not as much as the others, unfortunately). Last tracks cut: "Harness Your Hopes," "Gold Soundz," "Stereo," "Transport is Arranged," "Elevate Me Later," "You're Killing Me," and, believe it or not, "Cut Your Hair."

"Cut Your Hair" has always been sort of lame. Anyway, I'd have to disagree with you on the latest Malkmus album. I think it's one of best albums he's ever played on. His last album wasn't that great though. "Rattled by the Rush" has got to be one of my, if not, favourite songs.

Really very nice. Believe it or not, I've only recently been listening more intently to Pavement - desipte their importance in the grand alternative scheme of things, I never really liked them for some reason. It was actually "Stereo" that seemed to make me pay attention one day, despite having heard it several times before. I have to say that I did like Malkmus' solo ventures; I definitely agree with your notes on him as the "anti-frontman", though.

I agree with your summation of this fine band. They came at a crucial time in my life as well (i.e. shortly after my entry to the work force after law school, new home, new wife, and wondering if my days of musical discovery were behind me... then picked up Slanted and all was right with the world). I'd probably trade a few of these tracks with those you deferred to volume 2, but mostly in agreement. I've been meaning to expand my Pavement mix to a 2-cd set since buying the 2 reissue packages (and weren't those some of the best bargains known to mankind?), but figured I'd wait to see if the other 3 albums came out in expanded form. And as you saw from my recent post-Pavement mix, I also found Malkmus' solo albums to be rather weak, but reordering them and alternating them with the similarly dull Preston School of Industry album tracks made for a great mix and gave me newfound appreciation for many of the tunes.
