Comment:

This is an aural companion to the first 8 Chapters of Simon Reynold's 26 Chaptered Post Punk magnum opus RIP IT UP AND START AGAIN : POST PUNK 1978-84 Apart from about 3 entries who are sadly missing from my collection, this mix includes every band mentioned or detailed in depth by Reynolds. Other bands that should be here or Reynold's makes reference to are detailed later on in the book. Even though it does not include all of my choice, I heartily recommend Rough Trade's Post Punk double CD from which I've greedily snatched a few tracks. Below are listed the first 8 Chapters with relevant track numbers in parenthesis. ENJOY!

CHAPTER 1 PUBLIC IMAGE BELONGS TO ME (1)
CHAPTER 2 OUTSIDE OF EVERYTHING (2,3)
CHAPTER 3 UNCONTROLLABLE URGE (4,5)
CHAPTER 4 CONTORT YOURSELF (6-10)
CHAPTER 5 TRIBAL REVIVAL (11-13) (Side 2) (1, 4)
CHAPTER 6 AUTONOMY IN THE UK (5,6)
CHAPTER 7 MILITANT ENTERTAINMENT (7-10)
CHAPTER 8 ART ATTACK (11-12)

Great work - you're taking me back to the late 70's.I have not read the book. Where do bands like the b52s, the Cars,Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and XTC fit in with the resect to post punk?Even bands like X, with the release of their third album seem to have transcended punk by that time.

Very cool. In fact, completely awesome. I'm reading the same book and you beat me to the punch. Perhaps I'll try my hand at this eventually, anyway.

Great side a closer. It's actually one of my favourite songs of all-time. The rest of the mix looks pretty rad too.

This looks GREAT. I'm semi-obsessed with this style of music but there are a bunch of tracks here I've never heard. I ripped off the name of my web site (dimflash.com) from that Wire song.

I've nearly finished the book, and have already posted a couple of similar mixes myself - 'reggae, dub, experimental' and 'Out there.....out where'.
There's also a pretty good mix by Plushpig along similar lines, but in terms of thoroughness this is a clear winner !
