Comment:

Here endeth the lesson and my 5 Volume aural companion to the 26 Chapters of Simon Reynold's Rip It Up & Start Again. I hope you enjoyed the ride
And thank you for the comments.
CHAPTER 25 Conform To Deform (1-6)
CHAPTER 26 Reading The Twentieth Century (7-10)

Side 2 Some of these bands were mentioned in passing or in Was Not Was' case detailed in Chapter 20 during their early days. Others Reynolds regards as the inheritors of Post Punk. I personally rate British Sea Power. The Strokes, Interpol & Franz Ferdinand are decent copyists but what's the point? In the same way I'm not sure about Psychic TV, Laibach are either Nazis or pranksters but I kind of like what they did to Sympathy For The Devil and until they reveal themselves to be Hitlerites I'll continue to enjoy their Wagnerian Romp. Although Cobain meant nothing to me, he always championed post punk, especially The Raincoats, and let's face it Smells Like Teen Spirit is an angsty blast of sonic thrills. Sonic Youth I like and don't like but the presence of Kim Gordon makes the pill easier to swallow. I do rate Goo, though. ENJOY!

Excellent Dom! Thanks for the series. Do you really make all these on cassette? I always liked that Frankie Goes to Hollywood during those carefree 80's.

Fantastic. All of these volumes are essential. And Kim Gordon, to me, is the weak link in Sonic Youth, but whatever floats yr proverbial boat...

i agree with rob..kim gordon isn't too great...though i think she's getting better as they're getting older. i don't know the theme, but there's definitely some great tracks.

"Do you have a theory about who killed the Kennedys?" "No."

I don't have a theory about Laibach, either, but, yeah, you've gotta love what they've done to this song. Anyway, what misfit said, nice ending to a great series; I think I may just have to get the book.

Great series, Dom. I'll have to pick up the book. Apparently it's not available in the US yet, but you've singlehandedly created a strong demand for it, though!

This might be the best of the series yet.I was very into Foetus in all their incarnations and Poland was one of my fave tracks.I only have one Coil LP,The Anal Staircase, which I urge the daring to purchase.Side two is tremendous, the Furs notwithstanding;I never really got them except for Love My Way.But See No Evil, what an opener!I enjoyed the book too, everyone into music should read it.

Damn fine stuff as always. Especially love the opening triple threats on both sides. I still haven't seen the Reynold's book in the stores, but I've been anxious to pick it up since reading his kick ass article in the Guardian last month.

Bloody hell, I can't believe I completely missed out on this, Dom! This looks absolutely fantastic and is a wonderful companion to the book. I love your liner notes too. Much more comprehensive than my own post-punk series: I could learn something from this! :)
