Comment:

British radio DJ Johnny Walker has never been regarded as one of the medium's superstars. He's not a tireless / tiresome self publicist (tho' confessing a fondness for some of Peru's most famous export brought him unwelcome tabloid attention a little while back); neither has he ever boasted the cutting-edge credibility of a John Peel.
However I've always held him in regard. It dates back to the early 70's when I was still at school & just beginning to develop a musical sensibility. Round about 73-74 he held down a gig on Radio One's lunchtime show. This was a time when the station was beginning to relax its notorious playlist policy, allowing presenters a degree of freedom in what they played. Walker seized this opportunity to slip in the new sounds coming out of LA. During the long summer holidays, I was a regular listener and though my tastes were tending more to the English Canterbury scene the July / August sunshine created the perfect context for the laid-back bohemianism of the music he was airing. I like to think he helped prevent my tastes from becoming too narrow & elitist.
I put this mix together ages ago in a fit of nostalgia. Not all (or even many) of the tracks would have been played at the time but the intention was to capture the general feel rather than an accurate reproduction.

Recently, I started reading Mike Davis' "City Of Quartz" and dug it out to play as a soundtrack. I reckon it's held up pretty well.

Sorry I'm not familiar with Johnny Walker, but this mix does capture the time and place. Interesting connection with City of Quartz, too. Very nice.

This definitely captures the time and place, and I definitely love your picks from the Byrds, Gene, Tim, Van, Steely Dan, Joni, Neil (one of my favorites there), Little Feat and the Captain. I could, however, live without ever hearing the Doobie Brothers, Joe Walsh, or that Warren Zevon song ever again. ;-)

Just started getting into Joni Mitchell.Yeh,I know it should have happened a long time ago.My only gripe would be Van Morrison,a man who has the same irritation effect for me as his namesake Jim.As for Johnny Walker I used to listen to him at work a few years back.Helped me cope with the boredom.Oh and I still love that Zevon song despite having heard it 1000 times.

Yep, a time capsule that includes some wonderful picks and some teeth grinders which can be said about anything on the radio from any time.

Lots of great picks here, and I was in LA at the time. I'm with those who could live without that Zevon cut and the Doobie Brothers, too. That said, they are cultural artifacts of the time. I think some of the '40s and '50s LA jazz like Percy Mayfield etc could be a good sound track for City of Quartz.

Can't say I ever listen to the radio but this looks suitably Cal with a good line-up!
