Comment:
UK's Mojo has always been my chosen music monthly and I thought it might be fun to create an aural companion. This is the debut issue bought while I was living in Australia. My only criticism of Mojo is it's devotion to The Beatles & the ubiqutous poll of greats - a feature that all monthlies are infected with. This is pretty much in order of appearance.Side 1: 20lbs of Headlines 1) Brief article 2): Isaac Hayes interview (3) Island's 1969 rare sampler You Can All Join In with photo & article by Nirvana's Patrick Campbell Lyons (4) Liz Coctaus lyrical proweress under the microscope (5) Louie Louie by Dave Marsh - 1,200 cover versions & it's very own biography (6) Stone Roses `Have They Blown It' opinions include Tony Wilson, Moby, Sir Paul & Miki of Lush (7) Archaeology: U2's early days in press clippings (8 & 9) 19 page article on Dylan, The Beatles & Dylan meeting The Beatles (10 &11) Canvey Island Article by Will Birch on the R'N'B scence of the Essex Delta (12) Chris Isaacs Live: Greek Theatre L.A. (13) Aimee Mann Interview (13) 15 Page in depth article on Van, Avalon, Janet Planet & Van's influences.
Side 2: 1) Liz Phair Live : HQ, Camden Town, London 2) Big Star Live : The Grand, Clapham, London) 3) (3-9) A Review Of Recent Releases (10) Lee Perry sends in a Radio Show to Radio Lancashire's On The Wire from Switzerland (11) John Lee Hooker on ITV's Arts Programme South Bank Show (12) Identity Crisis features journalist Kimberley Leston and her memories of early Adam & The Ants.
130 pages. Front Cover individual b/w pics of Dylan & Lennon superimposed on a sunset sky.
Contributors include: John Peel, Miranda Sawyer, and Charles Shaar Murray.
Other articles: Andy Gill on Grunge: Witless, posturing, slacker arrogance, morbid nihilism, self-bludgeoning twaddle. John Peel reviews Elvis 60's Masters & wishes he could have saved Elvis from singing twaddle. Mary Chapin Carpenter, Afghan Wigs, Heavy Jelly & Dewey Phillips
Real Gone: Rockin' Dopsie, Louisana Legend, Zydeco King 1932-93.
Highlight pics & ads: Double colour spread for CD release of Red & Blue Beatles albums. Ad for Tommy The Broadway Musical. Say No To VAT on Publications. Isaac Hayes being crowned King in Ghana. Full size portraits of Wilko Johnson (Dr Feelgood), Dylan, Lennon, Sonny Boy Williamson, Van, Aimee Mann, Juliana Hatfield.
Feedback:
Interesting concept. I quite enjoy MOJO as well & often like the accompanying CD sampler. Its gotten even heavier on reissues since Vol. 1 it looks like.
Hmmm...sounds almost as exciting as Ambient Monthly (& its companion periodical, Drone Digest), ;-]
Looks like anudder nice series is underway, Dom!

Interesting.
I think Mojo should get you to do a CD for them.I have the same criticism of Mojo regarding their slavish devotion to the Beatles.Yes,they were the greatest pop group, but hey get over it already. These days I buy Record Collector.
This is a good one!
GREAT idea. I absolutely worship MOJO magazine. While I agree that the Beatles worship is a little over-the-top, I have to admit that I agree with it, so it doesn't bother me a whole lot.
As Rob says, great idea.We could get a great series out of Mojo.
What an inspired idea, Dom! And so very well executed, too! I also like Mojo (why is it that the UK mags are so much better than those in the States?) Fine work, my friend!
Mojo is first rate. I started reading it well after this issue, though. I know what you mean about the Beatle worship, but I have to admit that I can be a sucker for it. They do come up with original themes for old subjects. Anyway, great idea for a mix and well put together.
Very cool.
Another killer mix from Dom! I love Mojo; only pick it up semi-regularly, though, because here in the states it's veerrry expensive. Glad to see someone else likes "Trash, Trampoline & The Party Girl."
I must admit, if that had come with the issue in question, I'd have bought it! Along with "Uncut" magazine and "Record Collector" I'd say "Mojo" is definitely the best of the Music mags over here. I used to like "Q" but they've really got carried away with that 'poll of greats' thing you mentioned. One day I swear I'm going to pick up "Q" magazine and discover that page 60 features a top 100 of the best top 100's featured on pages 1 - 59!
not much gets through my door without the approval of mama MOJO. I actually kinda like the lists as they've inspired several mixes of my own.
I have to say, MOJO is pretty much my monthly music bible (although I don't, and should, have a subscription). This is a really nice idea and you've executed it very well. I think I like the liner notes about as much as the mix itself!
I try to keep my magazine intake at some reasonable level so that I read books, too. And I can never bear to throw anything unread away. But, when I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket, MOJO is where I go. Beautiful.
