31. Whispering 32. Sleep. Guitarsnob Guidebook volume 6. Genius - that's what Chet Atkins was. He was a self-taught guitar phenomenon. He was a master producer, a stunning fingerstyle player and possessed one of the most sympathetic ears in the history of popular music. This mix focuses on some of my favorite tracks from his ridiculously prolific period of 1955-1960, the time he released his most influential recordings. Not that he slowed down much after that. I've concentrated largely on the pieces which feature his solo playing. There are countless fantastic tracks where he backs up others such as the Anita Kerr Singers, but I prefer the lonely clean playing to the dated sappy vocal tracks. Guitarists don't get much more brilliant than Chet. He is missed. About a year ago, I purchased my second Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean. The first one, a mid-60s model that I owned about 15 years ago, was a guitar that I sold out of desperation. I don't remember why I got rid of it, but I'm sure it was for some stupid reason (like paying the rent). The one I own now is rather "hot-rodded" early 70s model, fitted with brighter Filtertron pickups - it's much more akin to the original Chet Atkins Gretsches. Plus, Chet actually played this one once - it was owned by a studio he used to frequent, and lemme tell ya, it's got mojo to spare. This collection is dedicated to Martin P. Lally, my grandfather - a man who knew good guitar music when he heard it. So there you are - Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Guitar himself.

Although never a big fan of single artist mixes, this one is incredible.

Nice job, Sean.

"I realized that what I liked, the public would like, too," Atkins said in a 1996 interview . '"Cause I'm kind of square."

But I think it's 'cause he had a perfect ear & spoke Guitar
with a perfect accent!
