The Brian Jonestown Massacre: My Own Private Wonderland (Disc 1)
Comment:
I have listened to almost nothing except the Brian Jonestown Massacre since obtaining the two-disc retrospective (Tepid Peppermint Wonderland) on 6/24/05. I was so blown away by that collection that: 1) I've since purchased every one of their releases (I know that they're available for downloading on the band's website, but I really wanted to support the band as much as possible); 2) I've done something like six versions of this mix; and 3) I now embrace Anton Alfred Newcombe as my Lord and personal savior, despite being moderately annoyed by his seemingly endless quest to mythologize himself in DiG! (which I loved, even though it sort of plays like an indie-rock MTV's Real World with shades of Spinal Tap). Maybe my fascination with this band will wear off--after all, I do hope to return to the other discs that I own by many, many other bands--but I don't think it will do so anytime soon. Although they've got their own sound, the BJM are obviously indebted to many of my favorite bands--the Beatles, Stones, Velvet Underground, Galaxie 500, the Byrds and Spacemen 3, to name just a few--and are thus genetically engineered to trigger hero-worship on my part. Thanks to Dead Man, valis (perhaps their most long-term, vigorous champion here--props to him for that and for introducing them to a substantial number of folks here), Sean Lally, popkulcher, buglady, Gerry, George, Shawn and various & sundry other fine folks on this site who have included BJM songs on mixes that I've loved; I honestly can't believe that I didn't jump on the BJM bandwagon earlier. For those of you out there who already like/love this band, what's your favorite BJM album and song (for the latter, feel free to include a few picks if you can't narrow them down)? My favorite album is Give It Back (followed closely by Take it from the Man! and Their Satanic Majesties' Request, respectively) and my favorite songs (among many) are "Anenome," "Servo," "Cold to the Touch," "Satellite," and "Fucker." I apologize for sounding like such a rapturous, awestruck fanboy, but that's what I am right now--almost literally bursting at the seams with enthusiasm for Newcombe & Co's genius. [8/11/05: Again, this was updated, along with a change in title, to reflect my new double-disc "response" to the Tepid Peppermint Wonderland anthology. As you might notice, I've broken with two traditions of mine here: 1) I placed all of these songs in chronological order across the two discs instead of doing two separate discs of favorites in chronological order, and 2) I included the band's name in the title, due to the "anthology" nature of this two-disc set. I'm going to still retain the original title for the third disc, which would function as the "bonus disc" in my imaginary issue of this. Of the songs that were removed from the two versions of the two-disc mix that I previously submitted, it really hurt to ditch "All Around You (Intro)."]Feedback:
Looks great, Rob. I'm afraid I can't really submit a favourite album / track since I've only heard these guys in passing, and have never consciously sat down to give them a good listen. However, as I've said before, I would like to hear more of them. This certainly looks like it would be a wonderful introduction for any BJM newbie!
I'm in complete agreement with you, Rob. BJM is a great band. It's hard to pick a favorite song, but I'd probably go with Anemone... or Servo, wait! Maybe Cold to the Touch. No, no. I know! Evergreen! Actually, Sailor was on my mind for a long time so I'm sorry it didn't make the cut on this mix. Anyway, you've made me want to sit in front of the speakers and listen to BJM but I'd best get back to work now.
mmm..I have heared BJM But i cant remember that band, i will check it out someday, anyway looks interesting and good for me :)
Further enticed...just ordered there "best-of" album.
I too got a hold of their retrospective last year and then subsequently got all their albums including the BBC/Peel stuff. Great band.
Glad to see you finally did this. I'm definitely a fan, but haven't really been "into" them that much for a while. Still, all great picks here. "Servo" is a fave of mine, and "Take it from the Man" is probably my fave lp (maybe b/c it's the first of theirs I really listened to).
I'd love to hear this! I've been meaning to track down some BJM ever since I saw Dig.
Gosh. I am sure behind the times. Guess there's some good listening in my future!
What Sally said.
I've liked everything I've heard by them.
I really just got on the bandwagon recently...looking forward to seeing them when they come to Chicago. If anyone's interested in getting more, you can get EVERYTHING at http://www.brianjonestownmassacre.com/mp3.html
There's a spot for a donation (I did...).By the way, nice mix Rob!

Man, oh man, this looks really great. I'd have to say my favorite album would be either Their Satanic Majesties Second Request or Methodrone. Too tough to pick favorite tracks, but if I had to name a few- Anemone, Straight Up and Down, Donovan Said, Jesus, Prozac vs. Heroin, and Miss June '75. Really,as you said, it's all great stuff.
I like BJM, too. This looks like a fine mix, Rob!
yehj The Brian Jonestown Massacre is great.
