Comment:

This is an expanded 2-cd version of a mix I did some time ago, seeking out the definitive mix of 70's pop (defined, roughly, as the enduring face of Beatles-inspired chiming guitar joy that managed to hide in the fringes amongst the prog and metal and glam and sensitive singer-songwriter crap that dominated the decade before punk came and blew it all apart). Big Star, of course, are the best of the bunch, though Badfinger and the Raspberries are often included in the same breath. My original mix focused on those acts as well as other like-minded artists from the early years of the decade. This time I've beefed things up with some lesser known but fine bands like the Scruffs, Blue Ash, and the Toms, and also added more music from later in the decade which bridged the gap from pop to new wave -- Shoes, Records, Knack, etc. (though still focusing on the guitar-dominated end of the spectrum, leaving the more synth-heavy pop for another day). Is this definitive? Who knows, but it sure sounds nice.

Quala-sonic!! I do think it was good that punk came along & blew the 70's away -- a mercy killing, it HAD to be done -- but it's good too that you've preserved the historic record like this, for future generations to ponder. Appropriate closer track!

Quite the 70s power pop extravaganza you've compiled here! Plenty to love above -- Cheap Trick, the Records, Shoes, Big Star, etc. It's hard to believe that the Knack and Badfinger shared the same decade.

The Harrison tunes and that Bram Tchaikovski song represent the best of the seventies to me.
