Comment:
Doing some housecleaning recently I unpacked a box of pix from my college days. A much younger friend saw said pictures and marveled at how "period" the hair and clothes were. Anyway, I put this tape together for her to further contextualize this period. These were all songs that in one way or another were representative of my freshman year (1984-85). Coming from rural Indiana, college was a revelation - there were actually cool people there who listened to great music I had either only read about (in mags like Trouser Press and Flexi-Pop) or had never heard of at all. A lot of these songs were put on some of the first mix tapes I ever received and a lot of them are by artists I still listen to (Buzzcocks, Clash, and The Jam in particular). Many obvious choices, perhaps, but twenty odd years back these songs held a real power for me.Feedback:
I'll a tad older than you (84-85 was my SOPHOMORE year), but this brings back lots of memories, esp the Naked Raygun & Flipper cuts, largely because they're bands I haven't listened to in yerrs. And gosh, I can remember the night when I first heard "Sex Beat" like it was yesterday . . .
well this is my diary round 83-84
Right on. The good stuff holds up! This does bring back memories, of being so absolutlely thirsty for the Clash & the Fall & the Virgin Prunes that I couldn't wait to get out of school and back to the records! Thankfully, there was one cool art teacher who let us bring music to class.
