Booster/I'd Like To Think Everybody's At My Mercy
Comment:
Brad Mehldau is so smart. The best part is his knowledge is coupled with an ability not to appear pretentious or pedantic. He has such a vast and deep knowledge of things and a street smart way of making what he talks about interesting and relevant, the way Cornel West does. But I'd like to see Cornel West play the piano like Brad Melhdau. Melhdau is recognized as one of the best jazz pianists working today, and though I don't know much 'bout jazz, I wholeheartedly endorse those sentiments. This tape finishes with Melhdau's instrumental flourishes, and begins with the vocal stylings of The Futureheads, an up and coming group from the north of England. My favourite is the bass player. I can't tell which one he is on record, but in concert, he is the most entertaining. He is tall, and his long expansive face does the most stretching when he does the long "oh-oh!s" The Futureheads are covering Kate Bush here. The first four songs on side 1 are covers. 9 of the first 10 songs on side 1 are taken from compilation discs. Track 1(and track 2, side 2) are taken from a MOJO disc compiled by the members of U2. Tracks 2-4, side 1, and tracks 9 and 10 side 2 are taken from a disc that came with a recent issue of The Believer. Spoon are covering Yo La Tengo, The Decemberists(I think it's just Colin Meloy on this one) are covering Joanna Newsom, The Mountain Goats(John Darnielle) are covering The Silver Jews(David Berman). The Shins are covering The Postal Service, and Two Gallants are covering a group called "Blear".
Tracks 6-10, side 1 are taken from a compilation of folk songs put out by Starbucks. I borrowed it from a friend's Mom. Tom Rush is, of course, covering Joni Mitchell.
Emmylou Harris' "Where Will I Be" was written by Daniel Lanois, who produced the album it appears on, "Wrecking Ball". It is probably one of my all time favorite albums, by one of my favorite singers. It had been lost up until this last weekend, and I was even thinking about buying a new copy. "Where Will I Be", "Do The Strand", and "Amsterdam" are the only songs on the tape taken from complete albums that I actually own. The rest are either compilations, borrowed discs, or library cds.
I saw Dylan and Haggard back in March, and Dylan covered "Sing Me Back Home".
