Comment:

I've uploaded volume 2 of this series (so far the latest), but here's the original (slightly less successful in my opinion). The theme is female singer-songwriters; the rule is that each song must be at least cowritten by the woman on lead vocals. If the "artist name" is different from said singer-songwriter, the artist name goes in square brackets. Some pretty unknown artists on this one: Jodi Shaw is a lovely, compassionate folk-style singer-songwriter on the New York City scene, a former poet who decided to enfold her talents into songwriting, who i had the luck to run into in a Lower East Side open mic, and from whom i bought her album The Pie-Love Sky when she was the only performer *not* to hawk her own CD, despite being by far the best of all of them. Susan Tobocman was practically my next-door neighbor for a few months; she's the most self-motivated performer i've ever met. she sang backup with the Tom Tom Club, and now works as a jazz performer; "Watercolor Dream" is absolutely splendid, complex as all get out, plus it's the first song she ever wrote and the title track of her CD... go figure. Ellen Mandel i don't know personally; i picked up her CD Every Play's An Opera on a whim in the basement of the Bouwerie Lane Theater (possibly my favorite theater in New York, Broadway or off). she composes music for theatrical productions, and the CD is her compositions performed by various theatricals; "Godot's Blues" however is a strange summary of Samuel Beckett's play "Waiting For Godot" performed by Ellen solo on vocals and piano. the rest of these artists range from legendary in certain esoteric circles (Jean Ritchie) to world-hero-level (Billie Holiday) and identifying them should require no more than dipping into the proper celebrity circles....
