The Book of Susanna
Comment:
It was the Old Testament days. The people were living in exile in Babylon.
In Susanna's town, they were governed by horny and corrupt judges.
This narrative follows the Biblical text of
Susanna.
The story is (supposedly) the oldest written account in which sexual harassment is punished.
It also contains a startling interrogation/perjury/execution scene that
just cries to be set to music.
"Mystery Babylon," like many reggae songs, contains biblical quotations in its lyrics.
"Double Team" demonstrates that Babylon was the opposite of
Surf City.
"36-24-36" is a classic anthem of lust.
And when Uzi's "Collections" comes on, you can tell there is trouble afoot.
Depending who you believe, "In the Pines" is either Traditional or a Leadbelly cover, and
is the same song that Nirvana fans would recognize as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night."
The other tree song, "Hemlock," is by an all-female punk band named after their own physiques.
When "Pass the Hatchet" was first done by Roger and the Gypsies in 1965, it was
controversial for its implied violence. By today's standards, it is pretty tame.
The Rye Coalition song has an echo of Nada Surf, "Popular." Bikini Kill's "Liar"
has a nod to the Castaways.
April March's "Chick Habit," (thanks
Moe) is a
yT-yT style song that dead-on presages the final dismemberment.
Feedback:
Susanna's music touched the bawdy strings
Of those white elders; but, escaping,
Left only Death's ironic scrapings.
Now, in its immortality, it plays
On the clear viol of her memory,
And makes a constant sacrament of praise.
-- from "Peter Quince at the Clavier" by Wallace Stevens

Wow! This is an incredible work! You really did a stunning job here. Nice tunes you picked as well.
Outstanding! I don't know all the songs but this is a great idea for a mix.
This is brilliant - great concept, especially. In The Pines is a fantastic song; I didn't know that the Grateful Dead had done a version at all! also love th April March, June Of 44 and Old 97s.
Wow.
This is a amazing stuff. Can't say I know everything, here. But, the concept, alone, deserves much props. Truly inspirational.

Looks great, nice original concept.
Loving a lot of this, and cool concept.
Very good. Particularly 16, 12, 7, 6, and 2.
that joey de vivre cat knows his stuff, as do you. This looks like a good and entertaining listen to me...
beautiful
Some nice ones here for sure.
Like the looks of this one mixxer! I bet you the song Lavendar Girl is great -- even if I have never heard it. Thanks for the name check. My mom always likes to see my name in print.
Wow mixxer! Looks like a LOT of thought went into this. Nice job. It seems over my head since I do not know much about the Old Testament.
this may be the most original mix i've seen yet on AOTM. excellent.
Great idea for a mix, this theme's right up my alley but I wouldn't have thought to use a biblical story. I wonder if a mix has been done for the story of Job...and I also wonder just exactly how Tenacious D fits into the picture, heheh.
The Tenacious D song fits to this part of the narrative: 19: Now when the maids were gone forth, the two elders rose up, and ran unto her, saying,
20: Behold, the garden doors are shut, that no man can see us, and we are in love with thee; therefore consent unto us, and lie with us.
