Comment:

Not much to say here... this is my mix CD of jazz vocalists, so under the artist field, the primary singer is listed first, and the group they're performing with is listed in parentheses afterwards if that's what they're credited under. One track, "My Funny Valentine", has no lead singer, but has its vocals shared among the Western Wind Ensemble. hmm... i suppose some of these tracks would be classified as rock to some, especially 10, 15, and 21; i don't know exactly what makes me decide to take these in as jazz (though as far as i'm concerned that's where they come down solidly), except for the swinging attitude they have that seems very different from a rock spirit. tracks 6 and 14 are cabaret; i've decided to include that in with jazz as well. none of 5, 11, 12, 13, 16 and 18 are sung by jazz singers per se; however, they're all traditional jazz songs, and listening to Van Morrison and Chan Marshall in particular, you could never tell that jazz wasn't their personal heritage. Janis Joplin and Robert Wyatt (who seems to make his way into every mix i make, not undeservingly either) are singing two of the most common jazz standards in the universe, and it's interesting to hear them here with their not-exactly-jazz vocal stylings; and tracks 11 and 18 are sung by acapella groups, with all the emulation that entails. Okay, so that leaves tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 17, 19, and 20 to be traditional jazz singing, i guess, except 2 might be bossa nova as well. hmm... Nina Simone's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" (Don't Leave Me) is the only song here not sung in English, but English-speaking monoglots like me might still think it's the most passionately felt song here; i personally think it's the best song i've ever heard Nina Simone sing. also, check out my "White As The Stars, Vol. 1" mix for more info on Susan Tobocman.

A solid line up of artists...I think you just about get away with the jazz tag...Them's cover of Screamin Jay's R'n'Roll classic is bluesy rather than jazzy but it fits the mix...Nina Simone's version of the same song is possibly the definitive version though The Birthday Party (Nick Cave's first band) comes pretty close. Ne Me Quitte Pas is of course penned by the Belgian chanteur Jacques Brel - the best English language version is by Scott Walker and titled 'If You Go Away.' Check Scott out if you don't know him, you won't be disappointed. Cat Power I've heard little of but I know Wild Is The Wind as covered by both Bowie & Simone. Apologies for rambling about stuff you might already know.
