Comment:
"The cello is a large bowed stringed instrument, the second lowest of the family of strings headed by the violin. It originated in the early sixteenth century, as the viols (bowed strings) of the Renaissance began to evolve into the stringed instruments of the modern orchestra." - AMG. This is a compilation designed to show the formidable range of the cello, an instrument capable of desperate melancholy, vivid color, fearsome hooks, tranquility, and so much more. The album begins initially on a vocal-backed and rockier note, and then gradually slides into a set of darker instrumentals. It then drifts again into rock/pop, hitting back and forth until reaching a dark and intense crescendo. There are so many standout tracks here, from the unstoppable cello hook brandished by A.C. Newman, the gorgeous 12-cello rendition of The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood", the moody atmospherics by John Zorn, Tindersticks and A Silver Mt. Zion - and the heart-racing solo piece by the master cellist himself, Erik Friedlander. However, it's the final track, by Venetian Snares, which successfully fuses all these conflicting styles together - combining modern drill'n'bass breakbeats with Hungarian-style orchestral cello bursts to amazing, jaw-dropping effect.Total Running Time: 72 minutes
Feedback:
Looks excellent! Always enjoy mixes that focus on a particular instrument. I don't recall ever seeing one that emphasized the cello.
This looks great.
This looks really good to me.
Yes, ditto the previous comments -- very nice looking mix (of course I understand why there's no
Yo-Yo).
Yo-Yo).
i'm glad to see "fling" on here, as a cello mix made me think of that song immediately...great job on the whole mix
Nice Mix... check out Maston Jones for more cello songs.
very nice mix.
Cello Submarine, ha, ha. Great work on this mix.
Gene's comment reminds me of one of my all-time favorite typos: when the Washington Post referred to that great cellist as Yo Ma-Ma.

This mix looks really fascinating, and I'd love to hear it. Let me know if you are interested in a trade.
Hey, this is really nice! Good concept too - I love the cello. the Magnetic Fields, Smog and multifarious Beatles picks are all great. "Cello Submarine" amuses me greatly, too. :)
Nice concept & mix
I'm gobsmacked - couldn't the velvet underground have made it?
Looks fab, indeed. (No Roy Wood?)
Great idea for a mix! I'd love to hear this one.
Very nice, indeed.
Smashing. Just plain smashing.
Looks moodily entrancing - the cello has to be one of the most soulful instruments. Love the cohesive/eclectic nature of this.
Great idea for a mix, as reflected by the plethora of comments. I used the Oneida track on a recent mix -- quite a gem!
as a cellist, this warms my heart.
