Slow Down: The Best Of The Primitives
Comment:
Hot on the heels of my wholly unnecessary and not exactly hotly anticipated Darling Buds mix, here come the Primitives, another late 80s girl-helmed UK pop band. Like the Buds, the Primitives started out with raw, unpolished power pop (albeit with a bit more of Jesus & Mary Chain-influenced noisy sound), tossed off a couple of note-perfect (if largely unimaginative) jangly guitar pop, and then tried to catch the shoegazing wave with (very) limited success. Still, though largely forgotten, they managed a solid handful of near-perfect wads of pure infectious catchiness that holds up pretty well some 15+ years down the road.
Feedback:
That first Primives album still sounds like it could be a singles comp. I wrongly predicted at the time that a decade later that album would be a source of covers for a whole new wave of pop and garage bands. The song structure is so simple and catchy just like many of my favorite sixties songs, but they had an 80's kick. Nice mix - you hit many faves. The next disc I grab will a Primitives album.
You skipped "I'll Stick With You"?! And what is the Stooges cover off of?
Cracking mix Marc.Crash was a great single:-)
So I guess you heeded my message to "bring on the Primitives." Can't argue with any of the selections found (and not found) here. "Stop Killing Me", "Thru The Flowers" and "Crash" are all timeless pop songs that kept me happy in the late 80s. It also didn't hurt that Tracey Tracey was a fabulous babe!
Oh so good.
The Stooges cover is on some posthumous anthology I picked up.
Just what Ion said, some classic poppearls here
Me wants.
yep - cute band.
