Comment:
Not the biggest hits (I always far preferred the live "Istanbul" here, with the amazing sax intro, to the studio hit anyway), but practically a summation of TMBG's career from their MIDI-enhanced eponymous 1986 debut up through 2004's indie-rock testament, The Spine. Lots of quirky songs from "misses" collections Miscellaneous T, Then, and They Got Lost; all live tracks from the Severe Tire Damage album, with edited fadeins/outs when necessary. Normally considered a "geek-rock" band, TMBG has in fact created some of the most emotionally powerful and truthful rock of the last 20 years. It always amazes me how their imitators, including Moxy Frnvous and Barenaked Ladies, completely fail to understand what TMBG are all about. My closest comparisons to them have to be Brian Eno circa Here Come The Warm Jets, and the Beatles circa Abbey Road. If you haven't heard them, please do so now!!Feedback:
This is cool. This Summer, while traveling to the shore, I introduced my kids to "Istanbul" (not Constantinople)...and we must have played it twenty times between traveling to, and back home again from, vacation.
Nice mix!
Nice mix!
Hmm...TMBG compilations always seem to differ greatly from one person to the next. Needless to say, a lot of these wouldn't come anywhere near a comp for me. ("Oranges," "Empty Bottle Blues," "Unrelated Thing," etc.) I had to do my comp in three discs...and there were still regrettable omissions.
actually i've got three discs too... maybe i'll post the other ones sometime. this one's my favorite of the bunch, i think. notice lack of tracks from amazing album "Lincoln" -- all of them commandeered by the other two mixes.
Wow, can't believe I didn't notice that, considering "Lincoln" is far and away my favorite TMBG record.
Aye, you've got it pretty much nailed here.
