Comment:

40 years ago, on September 25, 1965, the first rock & roll show premiered on German television: the legendary ,Beat Club" started off with a blast and the Yankees playing their famous ,Halbstark" (included in Vol. 3). For seven years, BC remained the only youth-oriented music program on German TV and, much to the chagrin of the so-called ,establishment" (worried parents, conservative politicos and the press), promoted ,jungle music" and presented long-haired hippies doing their ,thing" (culminating in one 45-min show having only four bands play 10+-min songs), usually spiced up with acid-influenced graphics and the theatrics of heavily wigged and sometimes bare-breasted go-go dancers. It remains a landmark in German television and - lead by its director and mastermind, Mike Leckebusch - definitely revolutionized the way pop music was being presented for years to come. The opener of this mix, Mood Mosaic's ,A Touch of Velvet" served as its theme music and was even kept by its successor, the equally famous and notorious ,Musikladen" (Music Shop), which started in 1972 and remained on the air till 1984.
This collection was actually made for a friend's 40th birthday a couple of months ago and reworked a little bit for this occasion. As the title suggests, it consists of 65 songs released in 1965, taken from the British, American, French and German charts, held together by Radio London jingles (which I culled from Lenny Saaf's fabulous mix, ,Big L - A Pirate Radio Fantasy") that were actually used by ,Beat Club" as segues between songs or as background sounds for flashy little trailers. Enjoy.
