Comment:

31. The Supremes - Stop! In the Name of Love; 40 years ago, on September 25, 1965, the first rock & roll show premiered on German television: the legendary ,Beat Club" started off with a blast and the Yankees playing their famous ,Halbstark". For seven years, BC remained the only youth-oriented music program on German TV and, much to the chagrin of the so-called ,establishment" (worried parents, conservative politicos and the press), promoted ,jungle music" and presented long-haired hippies doing their ,thing" (culminating in one 45-min show having only four bands play 10+-min songs), usually spiced up with acid-influenced graphics and the theatrics of heavily wigged and sometimes bare-breasted go-go dancers. It remains a landmark in German television and - lead by its director and mastermind, Mike Leckebusch - definitely revolutionized the way pop music was being presented for years to come. The opener of Vol. 1, Mood Mosaic's ,A Touch of Velvet" served as its theme music and was even kept by its successor, the equally famous and notorious ,Musikladen" (Music Shop), which started in 1972 and remained on the air till 1984.
This collection was actually made for a friend's 40th birthday a couple of months ago and reworked a little bit for this occasion. As the title suggests, it consists of 65 songs released in 1965, taken from the British, American, French and German charts, held together by Radio London jingles (which I culled from Lenny Saaf's fabulous mix, ,Big L - A Pirate Radio Fantasy") that were actually used by ,Beat Club" as segues between songs or as background sounds for flashy little trailers. Enjoy.

Yes, very nice series. Interesting to see a perspective so different from the American Bandstand TV rock n roll experience I had growing up in Philly in the 60s.

A really impresssive series; I'm sure a lot of work went into this. As you know I share your interest in Europe's musical taste in the 1960s, and I would love to trade for this. There are quite a few songs here I have never heard.

OK, I've read through all 3 now and am completely sold. Yes, I know/own almost all of the songs but one day, I would love to hear these as you have laid them out. I detect a lot of work on your part and probably some late nights!

Excellent work old chum! This three CD mix is my glass of beer. Great songs (at least the ones I know) and an eye-catching cover. I'm glad your friend wasn't born in 1999, or 1953 for that matter.

What a stellar birthday present!
I have to agree w/ Moe, your friend picked a good year to be born. I'd be surprised if there were 99 tunes of this calibre in 1999, or even 53 of them in 1953 . . . (although 1953 did have one thing going for it - no Herman's Hermits!)

Beautiful set Thomas! I'd beat myself up over it all if I knew there was no chance of hearing this trilogy at some point....

Very classy work Herr Mohr! A lot of Beat Club clips are shown over here - knocking heads with clips from Top Of The Pops - shot, I guess, at about the same period. I don't think we get to see the bare breasted dancers though.
