Comment:

I play three songs a day for my 5th graders during journal time, and we're doing a unit on space, so I threw this quickie together. Gustav Holst didn't write a piece for Earth, but I don't know who did. If you have any other planetary ideas, they'd be plenty welcome. Think 5th grade. Best, Mike

Sure you don't want to catogorize this under "Road Trip"? Cool idea, hope the kids appreciate. Check out one I did once on Venus.

Gustav Holst wrote the music, but Sun Ra was really out there!

Most of this would have been way over my head when I was in the 5th grade -- I don't know if 5th graders are still into space ships and
UFO's & such but if interested I could throw together a pretty juvenile assortment of "flying saucer rock & roll" you might try out - but then that might not be very educational.
Or do you think you could get any mileage out of my How High the Moon ?

I'd be willing to go back to elementary school for this! Wonderful!

Excellent! I toyed with the idea of making one like this, but couldn't get enough quality stuff. (A system-wide song is from Schoolhouse Rock! and called, I think, "Interplanet Janet.") Anyway, you did a great job on this. Did the kids like it?

Thanks for the comments, all! Les autres, they did enjoy most of the cuts. Hands down favorite of course was the Disneyland Space Mountain track. Coltrane and Sun Ra have won a few fans as well as detractors (as you might expect) Gustav Holst was a tough sell for kids with little exposure to classical music, but I felt it had to be done. Mars was liked (fast), Venus too slow. Thumbs up for Byrds, Jonzon Crew, Africa Bambaataa (Soul Sonic Force), while Langley Schools Music Project and the B52s, they didn't seem to be into. Hemizen, thanks for Telstar, I'll try to get it in this week, and I'm going to look for the Schoolhouse rocks track for sure. We're out to Jupiter today, Uranus and on tomorrow....
