Comment:
Thank you, Wikipedia:Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the novel, Lost Horizon, written by British writer James Hilton in 1933. In it, "Shangri-La" is a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Himalaya. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise but particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia - a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world.
The story of Shangri-La is based on the concept of Shambhala, a mystical city in the Buddhist religion.
Several possible places in the Buddhist Himalaya between north India and Western China have been suggested as the actual basis for Hilton's legend. In China, Tao Qian of the Jin Dynasty described a Shangri-La in his Story of the Peach Blossom Valley, for example. The legendary Kun Lun Mountains offer other possible Shangri-La valleys. There are also a number of modern Shangri-La pseudo-legends that have developed since 1933 in the wake of the novel and the film made from it.
(For instance, the Silver Surfers home world is named Zenn-la and his lost love is named Shalla Bal.)

Feedback:
'To seek the sacred river Alph To walk the caves of ice To
break my fast on honeydew And drink the milk of Paradise' - Nice concept, but I never knew whether Xanadu would trump Shangri La. As a matter of interest to nobody apart from myself, Shangri La is a hotel here in Dubai where I am told that there is no 'pillow charge' for hookers. It is very popular. The Rutles are great.

Nice one! I think I have that BW Stevenson around here on vinyl; time to dust it off.
I hope they don't pave Shangri-la and put up a parking lot.

very cool
I'm listening to it right now. What struck me was your dramatic sequencing. Who'd think the Shangri-las would have brought me to tears? The pain comes from not knowing where home is when shangri-la makes you realize that your own l.a. is just crap without the shangri part before the la.
Very cool.
Me, I've always felt like a stranger in paradise (on the few times I've been lucky enough to make it there). Perhaps this could provide a roadmap.
Excellent! Lots of good songs (Donovan, Rutles, Jennings, Knopfler).
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee. "
