Comment:

My '80s indie mix, loosely designed to be listened to in conjunction with my '90s indie mix (You must be on guard against wickedness at all times.) and my "best of the 21st century" mix (This modern thought can get the best of you). I compiled this using "indie" in the strictest sense of the word--all of the songs here were originally released on independent labels. Although I had originally intended for this to be more of a general overview of the decade, I felt that whittling the track listing down to one disc was more than a little daunting and I also felt that I'd done the massive overview thing a few years ago with my "Here's your chance to look me in the eyes" series. That said, I may do a more "mainstream" '80s mix as a companion volume in the not-so-distant future. One minor regret: I didn't use a Grant Hart-penned original tune as my Huskers (my favorite '80s band) choice; however, their cover of "Eight Miles High" is beyond genius and was sonically exactly what I was looking for on this mix. Last tracks cut: "It's You" (the Milkshakes), "Hate the Police" (Mudhoney), and "Cattle and Cane" (the Go-Betweens). Title from the poisonous pen of Mr. Steve Albini (for those of you who know that song, just imagine what other lyrics I could have used...).

Hey there f***face! Hey there f***face! Bring on the obligatory... Oh, sorry, that just spills out whenever I think about "The Classical." Great mix, hitting a lot of highlights from the college radio heydays.

Oh man, this is great. Usually when someone says indie I want to run & hide, but this stuff all kicks ass. I'm getting happy just reading the play list. I can't get enough of that Gun Club song, and oh, the Meat Puppets, and god do I ever love Beat Happening!

There was a time when this sort of stuff was pretty much all I was listening to. 11-14 are especially great--Husker Du's cover of Eight Miles High is brilliant.

some I know, most I don't - BUT - one day, one day, I would like to hear this (Husker Du were very underground in the uk, for example - I have heard them, but do not know them).

What I know, I love. And 'Plateau' has to have one of the most beautiful endings to a song ever. It never ceases to make me feel like all is right with the world.
