2005/10/03 --- iqaluit, nunavut

the samantha regine track is from a cancon music sampler put out by 'the edge'. other canadian content on the mix includes blue rodeo, who come thru yet again on their latest album 'are you ready'. basil donovan, the bass player for blue rodeo, sidelines on the albums put out by fellow torontonian oh susanna. the steven bowers track is from 'the best of the east coast countdown', another cancon compilation produced by jimmie inch, a former resident of iqaluit. edmonton-based jr. gone wild are now defunct, but put out some great albums in the early '90's. kim barlow is also based north of 60, in the yukon. oh, and of course, the arcade fire are fellow canucks as well.

the zooey deschanel track is lifted from the 'elf' dvd audio track, not from the official OST which has someone else standing in for will. i think the falling water just adds that special something ;) after watching the recent reese witherspoon flick, i couldn't get the eponymous track from the cure out of my head, so i'm hoping that moving it onto a mix will assist. the OMD track was made famous by the 'pretty in pink' OST. the k-taro takanami track is from the soundtrack to 'chobits' a japanese manga and anime project by CLAMP!.

last december, salon.com offered a selection of tracks free to its membership, so i downloaded them to a temporary directory and then forgot about them. 9 months later, i finally got around to listening to them. of the tracks that i liked and kept, 4 appear on this mix, including the ones by ted leo and the pharmacists, communique, the arcade fire, and i am the world trade center. i was pretty stoked at being introduced to them all, even if a tad tardily.

fellow mixers on aotm provided much listening pleasure thanks to trades. from lipstick vogue, i received the delgados and divine comedy tracks, salman provided the maow track and bingsy provided the v-roys. fellow iqalungmiut also contributed as greg lent me kim barlow's cd and malcolm lent me the donna's. malcolm also introduced me to franz ferdinand (am i living on another planet or what ?) on a mix that he gave me last winter, and i bought the cd almost immediately.

to round off this eclectic mix, we have classics from garth brooks and Trans-X. the latter track is found on 'hard to find classics', an alternative '80's compilation. as my poker buddy todd commented, you can't go wrong with a mix that includes Trans-X.

cover is a screencap from 'heroic trio' which features maggie cheung. i was hoping to get a nice action shot with her co-stars michelle yeoh and anita mui, but maggie's weapons were just too perfect :)

Looks like great stuff all around, and glad to hear that Blue Rodeo did it again.

As I suspected, Iqaluit is where the playaz play.

Man, that Maow song is one the best songs Neko Case has ever sung. That closer is pretty nice too. Cool mix.

So....you might not believe me but that's ok. I'm actually Samantha Regine, I googled myself tonight for fun and came up with your mix cd list :) So cool that the edge put me on a sampler...had no idea!
If you wanted to chat my email is samantha.re@hotmail.com.
Glad you like the song! It's very old hehe and my website is now down but I should be getting back into music soon
Thanks for the support, Samantha.
