Comment:
Yes, I know, the Sex Pistols aren't well-regarded by music geeks these days (too "obvious" or something equally asinine, I think); after all of these years, though, I still really enjoy their work. Yes, I know, their recorded legacy (particularly prior to Johnny Rotten's departure) isn't particularly huge (I think I've included a version of every Rotten-era Sex Pistols recording here other than their execrable cover of "Johnny B. Goode") and therefore may not be "mix-worthy." That said, this mix took a few hours to compile (in other words, longer than most of my other single-artist mixes), mostly due to the fact that several versions of most of these songs are readily available and I therefore had to listen to each version repeatedly to determine which one to use on the mix. If there are no symbols next to the track name of songs with more than one available studio version, then I decided to go with the "standard" (i.e., Bollocks) version of the track; otherwise, the following key applies to the remainder of the tracks, all of which were produced by Dave Goodman, the Pistols' soundman: * = July '76 session(s); ** = October '76 session; *** = January '77 session(s). For the most part, my maxim (to start, anyway) was to err on the side of including versions that featured Glen Matlock [my favorite Pistol overall, who happened to be a far superior bassist to both Sid Vicious (who pretended to be the band's next bass player while really playing the role of junkie fuck-up "punk" figurehead) and Steve Jones (who actually played the bass on most of their released recorded output)]; however, when faced with more than one version featuring Glen, a process of weeding out had to occur. On a couple of occasions, though--notably with "Problems," "Seventeen," "New York" and "Satellite"--I opted to go with the final versions, mostly due to a remarkable leap in power and (sometimes) tempo when they were recorded at the Bollocks sessions. At any rate, I'm finding this disc pretty damned enjoyable this afternoon and I hope that you, dear reader, do, as well.Feedback:
Can't go wrong with the sex pistols. Nice job.
Impressively handled. Count me in among the (apparently) few who view the Pistols not just as "important," but actually fun to listen to. While I'll admit to having a fair number of albums that sit on the shelf primarily to impress others while rarely finding their way into the cd player, I still take these out for a spin now & then (maybe not often, certainly not anywhere near as regularly as the Clash, but often enough).
this is of course great but (no offens) sometimes I may think You have too little o do ;)
If only this much thought and care went into the Sex Pistols re-packagings that are actually on the market! The band deserves it.
Sometimes nothing else but the Sex Pistols will do. Great job Rob!
Green Day must have listened to them a lot prior to the American Idiot. You can hear the old band at times in the new record.
Great overview.
ouhh yesss! I'm not big fan of Sex Pistols but nice mix anyway.
Not well-regarded by music geeks? I guess I'm not a music geek, then. Nicely done, Rob.
Never really cared about them, but they were pioneers, to an extent.
What the hell are you talking about Rob? I still love these guys, I was even tempted to write a comparison/contrast essay on the Pistols and Monkees back in 1986 when I was still an English major! Great band, great mix-- and very, very thorough!
I love these guys. "Never Mind The Bollocks..." is one of my favorite p.o.'d albums of all time.
good stuff - but where is Friggin' in the rigging? (an all time Gibi fave).
Never been a big fan...but...maybe, I've been to hasty?
I've always loved listening to them and it was fun watching them act out in the media. In 1978 I went to a Halloween party as Sid Vicious and had to change my costume at the last minute to add the slash wounds from his attempted suicide after being charged with the murder of Nancy. I'd love to hear this mix.
Yeah! I'm only catching this now - I finally have the internet! - but I'm very glad to see this one. And I'm impressed at the time you've taken over it. More than any other band of the genre, listening to them always makes me wish I had been there at that time, but the excitement and the infectiousness is still, to me, a major feature of the music. My favourite's always been Holidays In The Sun, so I'm glad to see that there too!
