Comment:
A Good Luck Mix for Annie who is having an exhibition later this month. Picture: Alvin Stardust (see below)She digs The Stones. Early Stones. I'm not sure where early Stones stop or start for her. I think she draws a line at The Devil & Miss Jagger period which, for me, is the best part of The Stones. I'm coming to the conclusion, and maybe I'm late, but most of their early albums were filled with the filler Mick could now use to hold up his crumbling features. Cruel? Of course I'm cruel I'm English and I reguarly whip
my servants and then nanny whips me.
Anita Lane, as well as being Cave's muse & lover, shared song-writer duties for The Bithday Party. Vocally she ain't up to much but, like Jane Birkin whose style she shares, proves the perfect victim for unshaven, lecherous bogeymen who like their women to call them Daddy. That being true this cover should leave a trail of love juice in it's wake. But it's a dry old stink. Sure Lane manages a passable orgasm but Cave's one limp sucker, so she's all fingers. And dirty fingers.not dirty in a I want to lick your fingers baby. You might be asking why I've included it on this mix. Well, I'm perverse. And because I once sat down with Annie and asked her to translate Serge Gainsbourg into English and it was incredibly funny. Not for you, perhaps, but it was for us. The best cover I've heard is by ex-Birthday Party & Magazine member Barry Adamson.
She likes Coldplay, I can take them in small doses. In another decade Coldplay would have been a goth band. A goth band without the necessary ingredient: humour. All great bands have humour. Even Joy Division had a death sentence humour - witness Curtis' epileptical jiving, his sense of fashion and his Tony Hancock persona and tell me they wouldn't have been a great band to bring in The New Year. At a live gig, the band's equipment broke down and an audience member leapt onstage to announce that night's bus schedule. You wouldn't do that a Coldplay gig because Coldplay's equipment wouldn't break down & if it did they'd close the curtains.
All Chris has is a lisp, poo brown livery and songs that sound like Coldplay and if that's humour I'm not laughing.
Alvin frightened me. In the sixties you had Charlie Manson and in the seventies we had Alvin Stardust. Aged 32 and dressed in a black leather suit with black leather gloves encrusted with jewels, Alvin reguarly cracked the Top 20 and as a side-line reguarly escorted young girls across the road in road safety advertisements.
Bebel Gilberto is not Astrud's daughter. You knew that I didn't. She should be Astrud's daughter for a multitude of reasons but she ain't. However, Astrud was the first wife of Bebel's father Joao.

Feedback:
Lots of good tunes here *takes A drink* oh yes :-)
Fantastic. Love the Cave/Lane through Prince run. And the notes....note to self...i need sideburns...
Love Georgy Girl and this mix.
very very cool and very very groovy
Great mix Dom. Know what you mean about Alvin's creepiness, but for me, all that went up in smoke when I found out his real name was Bernard. (Totally irrelevant additional info: he used to own a night club in my home town of Warrington: "The Nite Spot". It was a hell-hole...)
I once witnessed a Coldplay show (at Irving Plaza) early in Coldplay's American Tour for Parachutes.
Chris Martis had a pretty serious throat ailment and could hardly talk. He apologized for his condition...told everyone that they would all receive tickets to another show at a bigger venue.
He then asked if anyone knew all the words to four songs...And, a semi-drunk girl with a semi-decent voice joined them on stage for all of those tunes.
It was actaully pretty funny with the entire band laughing up a storm throughout.
I was shocked...but they "seemed" pretty cool.
The latter show lived up to the entire stoical view you submit, though.

Oh...kick ass mix, btw.
Haha, I love your liner notes. and I've never read a better summary of the Coldplay sound. Interestingly enough, the gig which musicgnome found himself at was a precursor to one I was supposed to go to, although it was cancelled due to that very same throat ailment. Anyway. Love the Sinatra, Cave, Air and Bowie!
As always I love it - who wouldn't. As always I curse your chosen medium. As always I can seriously identify with your comments. I had completely forgotten about Alvin's sideburns/boards.
Bernard William, actually. And he looks the part, doesn't he? By the way, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy is not Alvin's son. That's Adam F (as in Fenton, as in Shane Fenton, to be exact, Alvin's - or Bernard's - 60s persona . . . well, yes they did that long before Bowie and Madonna hit the stage). As a kid, I totally loved him and thought he was way past cool with his jool-studded black-leather gloves (Wrist watch! Crisco!). "Lay down and groove on the mat, oh honey, be my coo-ca-choo." Zowie! Excellent mix, btw. But, er, didn't you know Ananda Shankar was in fact a German expatriate from Hannover (real name: Andreas Schenker) who, along with his brothers Rudolf and Michael formed the Scorpions in 1952? Hmm.
Gorgeous (the mix, not the cover star).
What I know I like - esp. the Boyce & Hart tune... New Seekers covering Who gives me a warm glowy feeling. (And I did not know that about Bebel either.)
I love everything on here (except, maybe the guy on the cover)!! (And I didn't know that about Bebel either...)
Alvin Stardust's son used to teach me RE. Weird, eh?
