Comment:
Rod The Mod. This mix came about after some dinner conversation with my kids who were making fun of Rod Stewart and his recent multiple volumes of standard pop songs. I started digging out the old albums and especially the recent Faces box set to show that he was at one time a great rock `n' roll singer. So now for the last thirty years he has been doing a lot of crap but he is a big star for lots of people. I was surprised how successful his latest series of standards have been until I noticed all the women at work nearing retirement but displaying Rod Stewart screen savers. I guess they're buying his new CDs.
I could easily do another mix of his good stuff. What can you say about the guy?
Feedback:
Rod is great! At least up to the late 70s, he was a great singer and amazing singles artist. What's not to love? I'll take "hot legs" and "do ya think i'm sexy" over any of the drivel he's done these past 10 years. Still, kudos to him for building a new career out of schlock. Last track here is a real fave. His version of "reason to believe" is an all-time fave.
He was so great at one time. I love this stuff from the late 60s and early 70s.
good mix. your kids have a point. I hate his radio friendly pop songs, but he was great in the 60's and early 70's.
I'm with the esteemed commentors previous. (I'd take "Hot Legs" & "Do Ya' Think I'm Sexy" anyway and any day.., my wife and I were just talking about this last night and his new career direction.) Good to see Pool Hall Richard on here! May have to go dig out that Snakes & Ladders vinyl for Happy Hour...
his J Beck and early Mercury recordings were "never a dull moment"........after that, ugh! nice choices here.
This looks nice, George. I used to hang out with a cousin of mine who had a friend, Ron, who looked exactly like a young Rod Stewart (and purposely had the exact same shag haircut).
We'd all hang out at dance-clubs together. Ron wasn't all that fun -- but was
a chick magnet and there were, uhh...certain benefits to being a buddy of his 'cause he couldn't possibly handle all the action coming his way.
I saw him (Ron, not Rod) at a funeral last year -- he's now overweight with a
buzz cut & a little hazy due to the various chemicals he dabbled in -- & the
resemblance just isn't there anymore.
Curiously, (due to the debt I owe to his facial image) the only Stewart album I own is "Every Picture Tells A Story".

He was indeed great. All I have to say about him I've already said on my Rod mix from a couple of years ago ("Combed my head in a thousand ways..."). ;-)
Cool stuff. I wish there were a comprehensive collection of his even earlier stuff.
Always liked "You Wear It Well" but was never particularly a fan. Have not checked out his new "standards" stuff. As we've seen this season, there are different ways for a rocker to age.
Rod was great at his peak. Sadly he's past it now.
I absolutely love "Maybe i'm amazed" I would have included "Maggie May" though :-)

I would love to hear some of that pre-Jeff Beck Group stuff that I've seen listed places. I would also like to see Rod Stewart drop the songbook crap and go into the studio with someone like Joe Henry, T-Bone Burnette or Rick Rubin producing.
my personal thoughts on rod is that he has contributed more than enough to have earned the right to put out whatever he wants to release. he hasn't grown at the same pace as me but that is not unusual. nice celebration of rod when i appreciated him most. thanks!
Hmm. Surprised at how many of these tunes I enjoy.
Great picks! I agree with Sean as well...
I'm with mckbrd as far as the time frame of greatness. I have always liked that Beck-ola lp.
Mandolin Wind is an all-time classic (nearly as good as Baby Jane some would say!)& remember George, "An old raincoat won't ever let you down!!!"
Rod was great & I've always vocalised my feelings about this kind of stuff. Well done George! There's loads of Cds - cheap ones of his work with Steampacket that included Julie Driscoll.
I'm with Valis and Sean. Nicely done George.
Of course he was great in the Faces, and "Mandolin Wind" gives me major chills everytime (as well as "Love Lives Here"). I also have a thing for his early 80s stuff, like "Young Turks" and "Infatuation". But one thing's for sure: he was never ever EVER for a split second sexy.
EXCELLENT! He was and still is a BOY - although, like you have done oh so well, you have to pick and chose. (Five Guys walk into a bar is almost essential listening). Pool Hall Richard and Mandolin Wind are MUST HAVES, however.
Yes, Rod's early work needs neither explanation or apology. Drugs, money, and advancing age can do strange thing to a person, hence, his later work.
How someone who's early stuff is so great has sunk to such abysmal depths is one of pop's more unfathomable mysteries. Personally, I parted company at Atlantic Crossing (OK, I do have a weakness for "Tonight I'm Yours" for some reason). Remember him this way
