Comment:
Well, I never thought I'd see a Genesis track on one of my mixes let alone actually own a Genesis album. This being their first with a few bonus cuts thrown in and released by Dutch label Disky. I'm never sure about the whys or hows labels like Disky license stuff from the biggies. Is it because no one wants it at full price? I understand the 50 year copywright law which is why you can find say Thelonious Monk's early stuff on labels like Crimson at a fraction of the price for the same stuff on Blue Note. But that doesn't explain why a '69 release from a band as mega as Genesis is on Disky.I snatched Heavy Trash from the bargain bin not knowing they're a Jon Spencer side-line. In England we don't have bargain bins we have sale racks. My local store (actually we don't call `stores' stores we call them shops - in the States would you say I'm a thrifty shopper or I'm a thrifty storer?) Oh & we don't have thrift stores we have charity shops. Then again are thrift stores charity shops? I don't want to be charitable in a chain store and I don't want to be thrifty in a charity shop.
The Checkmates were one of many British guitar groups inspired by Twang Meisters The Shadows. Twangsters thrived on filler - for every Apache there were dozens upon dozens of mid-temp snooze fests and unless you're a Twang obsessive, you're best bet is one of many Shadows compilation - 50 Golden Greats are more Twang than is necessary, the carat factor is 0. negligible in about 30 Greats. For other Twang inspired fodder like The Checkmates, there's a decent double from Castle titled Twang.
On a recent TV Show one pundit summised that Busted, and I think we can add McFly to the equation, were responsible for changing the face of Brit Pop or at least what pre-teens wanted from a pop band. McFly are edgier than Busted but if you were to play me 2 tracks side by side and ask me who was who, I wouldn't know. Busted may have beat McFly to the punch but McFly are still punching their poppy pogo at those Boy Bands whose managers are busy sifting through Partridge Family songbooks for their next hit. Busted split and re-named themselves Son Of Dork.
Enjoy!
Feedback:
Heidi Brnhl? You must be kiddin'! And, er, what? Beg, Steal or Borrow? You're a sicko bastard, mate, a sicko friggin' buhsterd. ;) E' you tomorrow.
Presuming anyone else visits this mix besides Herr Mohr Track 1 should read:Bond V Oakenfold (Barry) (Die Another Day.
Looks good to me. And hey, that Genesis track (along with that album and the rest of the albums featuring Peter Gabriel) is pretty damned great.
Aah, this is great. Love the Bassey/Propellorheads -> Stereolab -> Fontaine (mmm!) -> Brnhl bit especially. And Dom, that's the best second paragraph ever.
Fer shure!
Love all of this...but, Side Two has really got me.
From Moby to Stereolab to Fontaine to Genesis to Zappa...whew, that's interesting mixin, that's what that is.
And early Genesis (the original Five) is fantastic, IMO.
And, thanks to you and all for highlighting the wonderful early T.Rex. or I should say TYRANNOSAURUS REX.

Really great stuff here, Dom. Haven't heard a lot of this in a while and it's making me want to have a ruffle through the old CDs! Like the Divine Comedy track a lot, and always did like that Propellerheads cut. Also re. the comments: I'm very much a charity shop girl. I've found loads of good CDs and records in there - and of course it means buying music and giving to a good cause at the same time. I know what you mean about the cut-price labels, though - I really don't know how they work.
More good stuff Dom-enjoy your notes too. I think McFly are cooler than Busted because they have a proper drummer not to mention better songs...
Your liner notes are becoming as enjoyable as your mixes! You should write a book :-)
I was beginning to think I wouldn't see this mix in its entirety - now that I have, I have to admit I don't know much at all. Of course, the inclusion of Ms. Bassey is always a great thing!
I asked for a bargin bin once when I was in this record store in London... I got a funny look, and now I know why. Anyway, great T. Rex closer on the first side and great Stereolab selection.
Looks wonderful, happy shopper. More great and eclectic tunes in this musical shopping (or storing) cart.
More cool stuff, and thanks for explaining the difference between English and American terminology.
you should be a writer . . .
This is so clever...Shirley Bassey is amazing...
