Comment:

Having finally picked up all the Byrds remasters, I revamped and expanded my old single-cd mix. A bit of karma at work here, as, wholly by luck, the 2-cd set neatly divided between their early classic period (i.e the still fabulous Mr. Tambourine man album through my personal favorite, Notorious Byrd Brothers) and their later, more country-infused period (when only McGuinn remained of the original members, with the exception of the largely mediocre 1973 "reunion" album). I've long viewed the Byrds as the best American band of the '60's (well, ok, tied with the Velvet Underground); even if their later work was less monumental than their better-known earlier albums, McGuinn managed to churn out a decent handful of sublime nuggest per album up 'til the end (almost), though, unlike the classic period, I'm less partial to the non-McGuinn contributions. My biggest regret here was having inadequate room for any live numbers; as the Fillmore disc & the Untitled/Unissued cd's amply demonstrate, the later Byrds were a dynamite live outfit, with McGuinn & Clarence White trading licks like few others. But there was too much studio stuff to pass up, so maybe next time around...

Boos for not including Gunga Din, Hosannas for including Lady Friend (the best thing Crosby ever put his name to)

Fantastic - obviously, this is right up my 12-string alley. All good picks here, with a few surprises, too (some stuff on disc 2 are real dark horse candidates). I'll second the notion on 'Lady Friend', though - one of the best singles ever.

Nice. This is substantially different to my 2-disc "The mechanical sounds of the era" Byrds comp, but I still love just about everythig here--a testament to how great this band really was.

I'm with you that the Byrds and the Velvet Underground were the best American bands of the sixties. Great collection.
