I made a livejournal post stating that anyone who submitted a mix cd theme to me would get their own mix cd with a hand painted/drawn cover. I got 22 submissions (yikes!) and this is the second one I finished. Sooo 20 more mixes to come!

Alright, this one is a lot more personal. On August 17 of this year, my good friend Michael Jankowski passed away. His sister Marie asked me to make her a mixcd about Michael, so that is what I did.I'm going to explain each song on this one, so bear with me. The cover is what it is because the first time I ever met Michael he looked just like Elvis. He had huge sideburns and big glasses. Yeaaah!

"i'm so glad that you exist" ...even if he is no longer with us, I am so thankful for the 30 years he was here.

02 GRANDADDY "yeah is what we had"
well, Grandaddy was one of Michael's favorite bands...the last day we hung out together we sang along to Grandaddy in my car. also, this song says "in this life, will i ever see you again?"

03 THE FLAMING LIPS "do you realize?"
quite the quintessential "tell all of your friends you love them.." song

04 THE DECEMBERISTS "i was meant for the stage"
michael was meant for the stage.

05 JOHNNY CASH "hurt"
this one shouldn't even need an explanation. incredibly moving song.

06 KIND OF LIKE SPITTING "maybe we should get married"
michael used to ask me to marry him everyday. really.

07 THE CASKET LOTTERY "midway"
one of michael's favorite bands. this song says "hard days are wearing me thin, not yet. please not yet" ...

08 THE MOUNTAIN GOATS "dance music"
one of the last times i saw michael was at a mountain goats show where he was running sound.

09 OWEN "places to go"
"i've a picture of you in division street" when michael first moved to chicago he lived right off of the division street L station. "you were taking a break from life"

10 ANDREW MORGAN "misadventures in radiology"
the lyrics on this one just make sense for when you are missing someone. "something must be really wrong for you to be this way. it's so sad to know you're gone, to know you're in such pain. and i miss the way you used to be, i miss you...so much."

11 NICK DRAKE "time has told me"
michael was a rare, rare find with a troubled mind.

12 ALKALINE TRIO "song for julie"
this is the song matt skiba wrote for me when my dad died. i wanted to share it with michael's sister.

13 ACE OF BASE "the sign"
michael's biggest guilty pleasure. he was seriously in love with this band. a mix for him would not have been complete without this song.
