Comment:

Most likely relegated to the "best bands you've never heard" category, The Action were one of the coolest (but most overlooked) bands arising out of the 60's British Invasion. Their (brief) career basically breaks down into three parts, each represented here roughly evenly. They started out as a nifty mod outfit, produced by George Martin of Beatles fame, with an efficient if unimaginative Motown sound. Mostly covers, a few originals, and hard not to like. The Curtis Mayfield vibe makes it clear why Paul Weller found 'em so influential. They then moved beyond their early sound with a more psychedelic, freakbeat sound, but still pretty poppy. Alas, the album they tried to put together circa '67 was never officially released, but the rough mixes eventually showed up on the amazing Rolled Gold cd a few years back. Some great stuff, somewhere between mid-period Pretty Things & Badfinger, loads of memorable hooks and guitar lines. The sound quality is a bit rough, but overcome by amazing material... like, say, peak Guided By Voices, but 30 years earlier. At that point their vocalist quit and another member stepped to the mic. They renamed themselves Mighty Baby (pretty lame name), and completely revamped their sound as a more psychedelic/prog-oriented outfit, with long, hard-hitting jams that veered from Cream to Traffic to Buffalo Springfield. Their self-titled album from around '69 is one of the great lost classics of UK psychedelia.
