Comment:

A week or two ago, Charlie Rose (of this fine site, not of the TV show) asked me to put together a list of my Top 40 favorite songs of all-time (I've actually made it a Top 56 at this point). These are the first 25, albeit in mixable order rather than straight ranking order. FYI, "Paperback Writer" is #1. Title (appropriately enough) from the pen of Lorenz Hart. [Note: Due to excessive OCD on my part, I've revised both the list and the mix. This revision was posted on 11/10/07.]

How could you top this??
OK, maybe a Small Faces Track. I really like the way the last 3 songs flow together.

Nice work, Rob! Great picks. I've had arguments about the merits of Paperback Writer before - I love it, so I'm glad to see it there. So many great other tracks - The Only Ones, All Green, The Clash, The La's, etc. And I'm glad to see The Smiths represented. :)

No arguments from me! Knew I shouldn't have looked at these before compiling my own. Mucho crossover here & on volume II. Excellent choice on the Plush tune.

Hi Rob -Merry Christmas (if appropriate). This looks like a fine mix. so the Wainwright version of Hallelujah is better than Jeff Buckley's, eh? I love the latter, and have not heard the former. But I did enjoy Wainwright on stage when he opened for Roxy Music a couple of years back. Best to you, Steve

Is this an offshoot of the lists we were making at the AotM group? Might have to make a disc myself...

HOW DO YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!?! Seriously, I'd love to pick your brain about methodologies, because any attempt I'd make at a thing like this would probably get hopelessly bogged down in current fixations and/or childhood favorites I couldn't stand to hear even one more time. I wouldn't even know where to begin....

Love that 10-12 run, but really the entire disk is superb.

Quite great, obviously. This is the one mix I've never ventured to make; I've come close (i.e. my mix of my 40 favorite-ish songs from 40 years, the songs most influential to my musical life), but never a simple list of my favorite songs.
While my own would overlap a tiny bit, and certainly we'd have a fair (but not overwhelming) number of overlapping artists, it's interesting to see how different our picks might be.
I love most of what's here, particularly the Kinks, Clash, Husker, Beach Boys, Big Star, and Beatles picks. But, looking just at artists we have in common, I might be more likely to go with Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," Beatles' "Rain" or "Day in the Life," Big Star's "Ballad of El Goodo," Clash's... geez, can't settle on one just now, Kinks' "Days" or "Village Green Preservation Society," Stones' "Tumbling Dice," and so on.
But obviously everything here is amazing.
Incidentally, I'd probably go with the one-per-artist approach just to avoid too much Beatles.
