My Glorious Year in Music
Comment:
Okay, so I made a Best of 2005 list, but as I compiled it, I noticed so many more songs that I listened to and strongly remembered from January to December of this year that couldn't really be represented because they weren't technically 2005 releases. So I said fuck it - I have to make a REAL list of my yearly memoirs. Unfortunately, that resulted in 2 titanic-sized mixes. This is the first one, and I made it in perfect chronological order, so "Lost in the Supermarket" is actually the first song I really fell in love with this year, like around January 7th or so. And yes, pretty much every single song on here was discovered by me in 2005, which is kinda sad considering some of the classics on here, but on the other hand, I'm proud that I had such a productive year of music-plumbing. This is by far the most obsessed and adventurous I've ever been about the audio medium, and it payed off big time, I think. There's not really any objective flow to this mix, but for once I have an excuse: it's an honest record of how my year unfolded, from beginning to end. This one only goes from January to about May 20th, while mix #2 covers from June to right now, the end of December. It will only mean anything to me, I suppose, because I have acute flashbacks to all the little "era"s in which I listened endlessly to all of these songs. Some notes: I found out about Neutral Milk Hotel through Art of the Mix, as a matter of fact, when I was reading the year-end stats and noticed that this unknown song by a band I'd never heard of was actually the #1 most used song on mixes here (this in turn eventually led to my further journeys into the wonderful archives of Elephant 6). Of everything on this and mix #2, the Strawberry Switchblade song is probably my very favorite that I discovered this year. Also, there are many bands on here that I had never heard of or bothered listening to prior to 2005, including Exploding Hearts, Of Montreal, Iron & Wine, Erasure, The Pogues, Altan, Ted Leo, Tegan and Sara, Rilo Kiley, Brendan Benson, and others. Pretty sad, huh? Unless you consider this a happy ending to my formerly sheltered life as a music fan. Anyway, I'll stop babbling now and get to posting part 2 of this mix.Feedback:
Lots of good music here. awsome work!
looks like your collection grew by leaps and bounds this year. and there are some great leaps/bounds here. good stuff.
This site does rock for expanding horizons. I haven't learned this much new music since college days. Oh, and the advent of Napster. Goh, to hear "Rudie Can't Fail" for the first time...good stuff. Check out the "London Booted" CD if you haven't. Slipperyhangdoglook turned me on to that one.
Great idea and series.
Wowza!
Lively mix. I can't even begin to tell you how much cool music I've been introduced to through this site. And yes, that is a great song by Strawberry Switchblade. Where are they now?
I gotta say, it's a whole lot easier (and more fun) to discover music these days than it used to be. I went through a similar period of mass exploration when I first discovered rock at the age of 9 (back in '75)... which meant spending hours with my ear glued to a crappy little transistor radio I got for my birthday. Much better when you can jump right in with the good stuff. Pretty great to be able to begin one's love affair with music with the Clash's London Calling album (to this date my favorite album ever), rather than having to wade through lots of garbage to get there.
guilty pleasure song of 2005? since you've been gone. i can't tell you how hard i rocked out to that last year!
i totally understand the musical exploration stage.. i've gone through phases before, sure.. but i feel this past year i finally let go of genres and let everything spill in.. it's been a blast.

What a monster of a compilation. I could harp on about all the tracks i love on this but there's just far too many. Happy you share my love of the Interpol track tho ( one of AOTM's top ten of the year no less ). And Strawberry Switchblade? Well that takes me back.....
great selections. solid.
Nice blend of eras for sure! This would make a great road trip mix, even if that wasn't it's purpose.
