Comment:

01/02/06 Update - Guess the margaritas weren't as watered down as I thought. Looking back now it seems like I didn't explain this quite right. The matches go in opposite directions so that track 1 links to 23, 2 to 22, etc. with the Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill track standing alone in the center. After listening to this a few times at work today I now realize it has more to do with things the artists have in common than the tunes themselves. To avoid confusing others & myself any further, here's the anatomy of the mix.
Stones/Bowie Well this should be obvious as Angie is supposedly about the former Mrs. Stardust. Remember when she caused a minor stir ten years ago with her story about finding David & Mick together in bed? That was the best she could come up with after her ten year post-divorce gag order was lifted? Sounded more like the lads passed out after a night on the town than anything tawdry.
Simple Minds/Belle & Sebastian Two Scottish bands; one from the eighties & the other just wanting to sound like it.
Dennis Wilson/Gene Clark Not the first names that come to mind when you think of the Beach Boys or the Byrds, but their contributions to their respective band's distinctive sound were revealed on their solo outings.
Clean/dB's Strong recent recordings from two underrated eighties bands. Bonus Beach Boys/Clean link - both feature sets of talented brothers.
Plush/Cheap Trick Both songs from these semi-local bands are from albums originally released in Japan only. Everyone knows what the story behind Live at Budokan. Here's hoping for a deluxe edition of Fed twenty years from now. Bonus Spiders/Cheap Trick link - both were big in Japan.
Dungen/Spiders Two psych bands, one from Sweden another from Japan, singing in their native tongues. Bonus JAMC/Spiders link - JAMC's first single was called Upside Down.
Hnsker Dn/Jesus & Mary Chain Another apparently obvious one as both were eighties bands featuring powerhouse guitar over pop melodies. Though, in my mind they will forever be linked due to a remembrance of a mix I made some twenty years ago for a coworker with what I'd describe as indiscriminate tastes (big hair metal fan). So blown away was he by said mix that he immediately purchased New Day Rising & Psychocandy, forever throwing away the mascara & hairspray. Bonus Dungen/Hnsker Dn link - Hnsker Dn is Swedish for "do you remember".
Detroit Cobras/Freelance Hellraiser One's a Strokes cover, the others a mash-up featuring a Strokes song.
Psychedelic Furs/Thirst Another one that's mostly in my mind. The Furs' tune is a favorite that was nearly ruined by a rerecording for a John Hughes movie. The Thirst song kinda reminds me of something from a John Hughes movie soundtrack.
Beck/Troggs Black Tambourine is reminiscent of an earlier hit from Mr. Hansen, The Devil's Haircut, a song that utilizes the riff from I Can Only Give You Everything.
AWB/APB Besides the name similarity, both bands were composed of funky Scottsmen who found their greatest success on US dance floors.

maybe it's my hangover . . . maybe I've finally blown all brain cells away . . . either way, I haven't a clue about most of the links. It is a GREAT mix though, and a GREAT cover. Lubbly jubbly!

Awoke & found myself still in the land of the living but still can't work out even a (French) Connection. Top mix though.

Got the easy one (Angie and David Bowie), then fell off the wagon). Interested in the answers if you get a chance. Happy New Year!

Gimme a one way ticket to Groovesville! Lots to love here, both on the mix and on the cover. Not sure about the Beck/AWB connection, but I bet they sound good together -- perhaps that's all the connection you need.

I'm entirely too tired to put all of your links together, but I like the look of the mix, nonetheless.

Nice cover. This is easily one of the best mixes I've seen this year so far.

Wow, this is very well put together - although it seems like I must be jumping on the wagon a bit late, because all the answers are there! Still, this has loads of great tunes on it, especially the Beck, AWB and B&S, and it looks like you worked hard on the whole thing. Which is always appreciated!
