Comment:

Since challenging myself to do a mix for every month of the year (after reading somewhere that director Cameron Crowe does it), I've concluded that it takes exactly three months to develop a satisfactory draft of any of these monthly playlists. That being said, the first edition of 2006 won't appear until April since I need time to get it ready. If regular 80-90 min. mixes are like feature films, then these are like hour-long episodes of a great television series, and as such I like them to be cohesive, and every song has to be in the right order for maximum emotional impact. That attention to detail has yielded some great results so far, and I'm continually amazed at how well the right songs and themes (and cover artwork) come together nicely in the end. This is one is more miserable than usual; not hellish or apocalyptic misery like some of the earlier mixes (see May thru July), but day to day fatigue and desperation. I think it's a bittersweet gem, and hopefully the coming months will see that change that's been such a long time coming.

I admire your ethic and devotion. I used to be more meticulous in my mix-making but recently I've taken to slapping them together a bit more hastily. I should take a page from your lesson plan, and maybe my mixes would be better than just "good, kinda". As for this one, I dig your bittersweet intentions. Eels of course are always the first band I go to when I'm in that mood. Really good Brendan Benson, Stars, Soft Boys, Posies (keen combo of musicians, by the way), and Coheed & Cambria. See you in April, then. I'll be awaiting your masterpiece :)
