Sunlight Shines: A Pernice Brothers Anthology
Comment:
An assorted mix from one of my favorite rustic pop acts of the past decade, Joe Pernice et al. Could have easily stretched this into a 2-cd mix, but decided to stick primarily with the more upbeat, poppy tracks (with a few exceptions), leaving the more somber, Americana-infused tracks for a rainy day (when they sound best). As a result, I stuck primarily with the 4 stellar Pernice Brothers albums, with just a few token tracks from Joe's earlier country-influenced band, the Scud Mountain Boys, and a couple tunes from his solo album and one-shot as Chappaquiddick Skyline. Decided to forgo the more typical chronological arrangement in order to mix the tempos and styles a bit (as there has been a steady evolution towards a slicker sound with better production, and more synths in place of acoustic guitars).
Feedback:
One of my favourite bands. This looks great.
seems i've been hiding behind a rock or something, as i do not know this band.....with your overview i will have to look into them!!!
Very good.
Excellent stuff!
A dream mix for me! If I had a wish list, this would be on it. Stellar.
Just got into them last year and am now a huge fan tho hint hint this would extend my appreciation markedly.
Superb! I'm a big fan of the band's poppy songs with a bit of a kick, and all my favorites can be found here (7:30, Working Girls, Weakest Shade of Blue)
wait, what? in Scud Mountain Boys?! I had no idea! :)
Yeah, Love the Pernice Brothers. Great Mix. My personal faves...1, 6, 13, 21 & 22.
yep - great tribute.
Man, finding the upbeat material among the Pernice Brothers collection is no easy task. Good job. I saw these guys early this year and despite a small crowd, they put on a stellar show.
I always thought of Joe Pernice as more rainy-day than sunlight, but I guess this does prove there's another way to hear him -- so probably this mix makes more of a statement than a 2-CD set would -- looks good.
I've also been meaning to make a best-of the more upbeat side of Joe Pernice. This is great. Youhit my 3 faves 7:30, Waiting for the Universe, and Snow. I really should back and give the Scuds another try - I didn't get them the first time.
Great, great mix. All of my favorites are here. I'd considered doing a Pernice mix, but I may just steal your tracklist and be done with it.
Fantastic overview, and like TKG said, definitely not an easy task. I have to agree with you re. the idea to sacrifice chronology for flow - there are some single artist mixes where that idea just works better. Really nice.
