Comment:

A bunch of hopefully heartening love songs (plus one drinking song, #4) from my two favorite Celtic solo artists. I was thinking of a particular narrative while sequencing this, kind of like the one on my all-Van mix "Buttercup Summers" -- Van finds love, loses love, and finds it again, with Andy's songs acting in the role of an external narrator -- but I think I'll let whoever listens to this mix tease it all out, as much as the narrative actually fits -- I'm not quite sure, you know; but these are still great songs!! Andy M. Stewart is a Scottish folk singer with an immensely warm voice who came to prominence in the band Silly Wizard, featured on track #8, and also no slouch of a songwriter to put it mildly; Van Morrison of course needs no introduction, but let me just say that I made this mix when I was first getting into him, and "Beside You" and "Brown Eyed Girl" are still among my top three VM songs. ("Brown Eyed Girl" encapsulates both the innocence and the dark undercurrents of the Sixties better than any other song I know; it's made of the same stuff as, say, "And It Stoned Me" and deserves to be taken quite seriously, I think. For a while it was my favorite song in the world.) My absolute favorite Van Morrison song, "In the Garden", doesn't show up because it would sort of overshadow everything else on this mix if it did... in fact it shows up on "Wonder Could You Ever Know Me?" and almost overshadows everything *there*, don'tcha know....

Hey, I almost used Raglan Road for my nephew mix, cos I sing that all the time! When that lp came out, Rolling Stone panned it as a good Chieftain's record ruined by Van's vocals. I love that album. Anyway, looks interesting.

"Ruined by Van's vocals"...? Heresy!! I don't know a single singer who I'd rather "ruin" my album, don'tcha know. it's probably the best album of Irish music I own (and I prefer the folk songs to Van's own tracks)! it never ceases to amaze me the new life he breathes into "Raglan Road", "Star of the County Down", "Carrickfergus", "She Moved Through The Fair", and... yeah, I'll stop talking.
