Comment:

Ahh...it seems as though Volume IV's swirley, whirley psychedelic punch had somehow put the AoTM boards into a temprorary tizzy...Here's hoping this one doesn't have similar effect. Rather, my hopes are that my fellow AoTMers may become entranced with these far out and raw sounds.....And, to continue the series, properly...here's our artist highlight: Kim Fowley - (Wikipedia does a fine job providing highlights on this artist, producer & purveyor of all things psych and wonderful) Kim Fowley (born 1942) is an American pop and rock singer, songwriter, and record producer, best known for helping record the 1966 novelty record They're Coming to Take me Away, Ha Ha, recorded by Jerry Samuels under the name of Napoleon XIV. The B-side consisted of the A-side played backwards. He was also involved in the recording of the novelty hit "Alley Oop" by The Hollywood Argyles in 1960. During the 1960's in Los Angeles, he produced probably hundreds of recordings that were released on singles. Only a few of them became hits (one of which was the recording of Popcicles and Icicles by The Murmaids, written by1 future Bread frontman David Gates). He also worked as a recording artist in the 1960's, issuing flower power albums such as "Love Is Alive and Well." In 1965, he wrote and produced a cult record about the psychedelic experience, called The Trip. Released in June of that year, it was the first rock and roll song about LSD. Though not a hit in the USA, it was a hit in Europe and oddly, one of the first releases on Island Records.Besides his work with Napoleon XIV, Fowley perhaps came closest to mainstream recognition (and chart success) during a period from 1969 to 1971, when he collaborated with his friend Skip Battin, then bass player for the Byrds, on a number of songs. Several appeared on the group's hit 1970 album, Untitled; one, from the 1971 LP Farther Along, was even released as a single: "America's Great National Pastime". The novelty-Americana slant of much of this material was not well-received, however.Later he was the manager of The Runaways, and wrote songs for KISS, Helen Reddy, Slade, and many others. His efforts as a solo artist since 1970 have sold poorly, but his albums of the 1970s such as "I'm Bad" and "International Heroes" have been cited as an influence on punk rock. Some of his New Wave styled recordings of the late 1970s have been cited as prefiguring the electroclash genre, and electroclash band Add N to (X) featured Fowley as a guest on their "Loud Like Nature" album. He has tended to keep a lower profile in the 1990s and 2000s. He is featured in Mayor of the Sunset Strip, a 2004 documentary about influential LA DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, in which Cherie Currie of the Runaways accuses him of being a misogynist. This may have been due to considerable litigation between the members of the Runaways and Fowley over various unsettled financial matters. Fowley currently lives in California and still works as a record producer for hire and occasional recording artist.

Is there no limit to the psych-juices leaking from your brain? Love that transition from Pearls into Forest... and I bet the others are great too.

Lol (re: your comment on my mix)..I always know more than I think I do on your mixes but not as much as I probably should do! i must admit I envy you guys in The USA having so much garage goodies when all we have is The Stones, Yardbirds & a few 60's comps provided by the Castle label. Maybe I was born on the wrong side of the pond and maybe not...we do have Europe ;) anyway another outstanding mix in the collective archive...I think imho opinion, considering your output and genre busting mixes which are superbly annotated (something I gave up doing) you rank as one of the best mixers on the site! Enough of the praise, here's a criticism...for god's sake use HTML ;)!

Yes, a little HTML would make your mixes easier on the eyes -- but they're certainly easy on the ears. Diggin' the Q65, Lee Mallory and Fire. Saaf did an excellent Kim Fowley mix awhile back. www.artofthemix.org/findamix/GetContents.asp?strMixid=81322

All you're really after is the 'new paragraph' HTML. does the trick, without the spacing. Bold text is , italic's is , etc. Don't need nothin' too fancy.

Hey Gnome. The psych tunes just keep on tumblin' on. Great work.

Per your mention of "They're Coming to Take Me Away," fans can find 14 different covers of that song here, and scroll down to "Session 16."

BTW, nice awesome HTML. ;-)

Hmm, can't guess whether Dom means the "we do have Europe" comment in the Maggy Thatcher sense (Europe as an ungainly cyst) or as something of which to be proud. Anyway, great mix and HTML coding.
