Comment:
This is a thorough re-working of my 7/30/01 tribute to one of my favorite artists in the history of recorded music. After recently listening to the old version of this mix, I decided it needed this update--not only have I acquired additional material through "unofficial" releases, but my taste in Syd's output has shifted slightly. There are obviously some tracks that I would have loved to have included--"Dominoes" and "Gigolo Aunt" more than any others--but alas, 80 minutes is too little time to adequately cover the man's fantastic (yet all-too-brief) career. When possible, I erred on stripped-down versions of his solo material; if I did not include the take number after the track, then it is the "standard" version from either The Madcap Laughs, Barrett or Opel. May the great man rest in peace. Just as a footnote, I think it's bizarre that I posted both my Love mix and my original Syd mix on the same day five years ago (only to have the two men most primarily involved in both of those projects pass away within a month of one another)...Feedback:
Well done Rob. I am not a huge fan (o.d. On Dark Side Of The Moon in colleage) but have been listening a lot to See Emily Play lately.
I have been playing your original rendition of this mix quite a bit since Syd's passing. A very odd soundtrack for a day at the office I must say.
Believe it or not, but I don't even own any Pink Floyd or Syd Barrett albums. I know a lot of the albums and songs but never really invested too much into it for some reason. After reading your notes I think I should reconsider.
hard to go wrong here.
Oooh, this is wonderful, Rob. I've always enjoyed Pink Floyd (my dad's favourite band, ever, so being a fan was a prerequisite in our house...) but for some reason haven't heard quite as much of Syd solo. So there are quite a few things I haven't heard by Syd, but which I'm sure are just as great as your liner notes suggest. I think I'll definitely be requesting this one. ;) Great stuff.
I'll never forget hearing "Maisie" for the first time on KEXP (still KCMU at the time) while working a late shift in a Seattle hospital. It was a perfect little moment, to be sure. Cheers on the mix, Rob.
Nifty. I chose similar tracks for my own attempt awhile back, though I opted to alternate the Floyd/Barrett tracks for the sake of variety.
I have to say, I prefer the polished versions of the solo tracks; I only rarely listen to Opel or the demo versions appended to the two proper albums -- just a bit too emotionally (and sonically) grueling for me. Incidentally, in reading one of the many memorials, I was intrigued to find out that Syd suffered not only from schizophrenia (not to mention diabetes, autism, and other ailments), but also had symptoms of synethesia as a child (i.e. seeing sounds and hearing colors) -- pretty messed up.
