Comment:
i made this mix as a request from a friend of mine who's never received a mix from me, or anyone else for that matter; & to be quite frank & honest, i'm not too satisfied with the finished product. i tried to work within the confines of his narrow-minded taste in music (primarily metal, hard rock, classic rock, & little else), while pushing the barriers slightly, without going too far outside his range as to totally turn him off. what i ended up with is a boring collection of the usual suspects; a retread of artists who have turned up on countless past mixes in a not-so-revelatory, entirely too safe fashion. i'm not too happy with many of the transitions from song-to-song either, & the parts i'm most fond of are isolated song moments that i particularly like as stand-alone tracks (the black crowes & heartbreakers picks, specifically). i added the thom yorke track just to add some flavor to the otherwise predictable line-up, knowing he's into some techno & electronica. the idea to rework the entire thing to my satisfaction crossed my mind, but with only a couple blank discs left & a recipient who will probably listen - in full - once, maybe twice, i found it not worth my time or effort. i'll pick up the pace with my upcoming mixes; i've got a few in the pipeline that're turning out very much to my liking. the title is from the black crowes song.Feedback:
not bad, but you are right, it's sort of carbon-copyish of other mixes. Try and open his mind to new music. It's not like he's going to hate you forever if you send him a mix with some Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Nick Drake, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, etc. Right??
trust me i've tried, he's entirely too narrowed-minded; matter of fact, he specifically told me not to put on anything he didn't like. it would go in one ear & out the other, as usual, & as long as i'm putting something into his ears, mine as well feed into his tastes. after all, this is only going to be a one-off thing, i don't plan on making him any more.
I have a buddy like that too. Never understood why you would request a mix of tunes you already like (unless you are looking for specific tunes.) A waste of your time and effort and you obviously got no joy out of it. I would charge him for a blank CD-R.
Well I applaud you for taking the trouble to make this mix for you "narrow-minded" acquaintance. I'll even forgive your lower case fixation. However, the "he specifically told me not to put on anything he didn't like" statement is sufficient grounds for not bothering. As I said, I applaud you, but I'd have told him to return to his tunnel and switch off the electricity for fear he might hear something he hadn't heard before. Heaven forefend he might like it. Mr. Petrucelli has summed matters up very succinctly.
thanks for the feedback guys - now i don't feel so guilty about feeling resentful of him making me waste my time & a blank disc, haha.
Very interesting, as well as the other valid points raised by the guys I feel compelled to point out that if this friend didnt already own at least 80% of this already well then he is beyond redemption. A brave attempt Anthony and I can relate to your frustration big time.
Yeah, the "why even bother?" question definitely comes up when looking at your comments. That said, this is still a batch of decent-to-very-good songs (with the occasional great track--most notably "White Light/White Heat"--thrown in for good measure)...
On the scales of justice I give you high marks for doing something for a friend. That said blow his sock off with a companion mix that you put your passion into. Share the music.
Next time make the ungrateful sod a mix of tracks YOU love. You never know, you may surprise him. Having said that this mix is still pretty cool..
Yeah, I've made a few like this for friends with narrower tastes, though they don't come out too bad, this one looks great, just maybe some obvious choices. I call my series "Guilty Pleasures"
