Although I would not have picked it as a favorite year, there clearly was plenty of stuff to enjoy. Nice collection.

1981 and not a New Romantic in sight. Some good stuff on here, Sheena's 9 to 5 has always been a fave. Love both Rick James cuts too....

Curious selections and flow, but I do like the doses of funk.

Both rich and rhythmic. For the most part I agree with your final cuts save for John Lennon.

Heck, you've got enough castoffs for a Vol. II!

Lots of tunes with meaning for me on this one, 3,9,13 and 19 especially. Your cast-off, if played in order, would make for an interesting if odd listen.

my first exposure to contemporary pop music was when I watched the Solid Gold 1981 Top 40 Countdown in early '82 at the Van Leuvan's house outside of Zillah, WA. my family had gone to their house for Sunday dinner, and I watched the show with their two kids, who were older than I and really into music. In fact, I first began collecting records right after that, when I started special-ordering the 7" singles of most of the songs on Solid Gold's list. I still remember that "Celebration" squeaked in at #40, "Morning Train (9 to 5)" was #10 and "While You See a Chance" was #34, I think. "Woman" was #12 and "Bette Davis Eyes" was #1. (Let me know if you want the rest. on second thought, look who I'm talking to. you probably already have it.) Nothing else here made the Solid Gold Top 40 cut, unfortunately. but obviously, your mix brought back some great memories for me. lots of the songs I didn't think I knew here are ones I now remember fondly as tunes I heard when my ears were glued to 107.3 KFFM in Yakima, WA in the early '80s. an excellent collection, Retro Joe - and I look forward to more.

oops. I found my Solid Gold list from 1981 and I was mistaken, there's another here that's on their list: "Her Town Too" was #24 of the year. over and out.
