Comment:

One of the first cdr mixes I made shortly after buying a cd burner way back when, finally getting the 2-cd deluxe treatment they deserve...

Undeniably one of the finest alt.pop bands of the 90's. Though not spoken of in the same hushed tones as, say, Pavement or Wilco, their contributions to the indie pop canon can't be understated. More great songs than you can shake a stick at (particularly on the sublime '91 fuzzed-out Big Star-worshipping Bandwagonesque and the nearly as great follow-ups Thirteen and Grand Prix. The pre-Bandwagonesque material doesn't date very well, and they've been on a steady decline over the past few years, with workmanlike mellow pop but fewer killer hooks, but still plenty of fine originals to be found. Plus, you've gotta give 'em a nod for loading up their b-sides with some of the most impeccably-chosen cover songs one can imagine. (I don't usually note original artists in the track list, but it gives a flavor of their fine taste & influences.)

I love their work through Songs from Northern Britain. I'm pretty sure you've seen my two-disc version of this from '01 (Some people like to fuck with you)...

the covers really do give this mix context - one of my favorite pop bands in recent memory, you've done a fine job rounding up some of their best work

What the world needs now is a little more TFC. Yes, these guys deserve a little more respect. Perhaps it's because they're tucked away in Glascow. Was lucky enough to see them live with about 200 other people when they were pushing Bandwagonesque. Super mix! I'll admit that I've sort have fallen off the TFC bandwagon in the late 90s, but I love 'em anyway. Everybody's Fool still gives me goosebumps, and there are plenty of other songs here that make me happy as a little girl. Good to see the BMX Bandits represented, but I've never even heard of Astro Chimp. Must investigate!

Possibly my favourite band of the 90s. I actually bought 'Bandwagonesque' as a fresh faced 15 year old the same day as 'Screamadelica' and 'Loveless'. Not a bad days shopping, I'm sure you'll agree. My favourite album of theirs, song for song, is 'Grand Prix'. Almost a perfect Ten for me. Only the underwhelming closing track spoils it. Thirteen has its moments. Songs From Northern Britain has many, but since then alas, the moments have been few and far between. Though 'I Need Direction' is a corker..
Anyway, GREAT mix. One I could listen to again & again. But wait a minute..Like A Virgin? Where on earth is that from??
