Comment:
I first tried Townes Van Zandt based on Steve Earle's famous comment that Townes Van Zandt is a better songwriter than Bob Dylan. I'm not sure I can qualify as a true Townes Van Zandt fan since I can't agree with that statement (although I should earn some bonus points for suffering through Be Here For Me Now, which must be the most boring documentary that has ever been made, especially for such an interesting subject as Townes Van Zandt). Anyway, with all due respect to Steve Earle, I think Townes Van Zandt's work is too inconsistent, and the arrangements are really lacking for a lot of his work, to compare to Dylan -- but definitely, at his best (If I Needed You, Rex's Blues, Snowin' on Raton, To Live Is To Fly, and The Catfish Song), he comes close, as these songs have some of the greatest lyrics ever written in my opinion.Feedback:
another on of my favorites gets the krenzel16 s.a.m. treatment. a very difficult selection process which i have yet to undertake but i would start with the highway kind and greensboro woman. hemizen and i built a mix around the steve earle quote. if you have the patience to read through the commentary you can get my thoughts on townes vs bob. http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=107992
The Townes vs. Bob mix is a great idea -- I am going to have to see about putting that mix on my MP3 player :) It would have been funny if you put Bob Dylan's version of Pancho and Lefty on your mix. Did Townes Van Zandt ever cover a Bob Dylan song? I can't think of anything . . .
i believe i searched unsuccessfully for cross covers when we did the mix.
I said it once and I will say it again. I love Townes and I love Steve but noway is Townes a better overall song writer. Very nice mix.
