Comment:
A friend of mine recently went through a break-up of sorts and is now dealing with the emotional repercussions. So this is for her. I believe that a truly productive mix is not a thick sugar coating, but rather a reflection of reality. So it's kind of an evolutionary mix that starts sadder and gets more hopeful, to ease her out of her cocoon of sad. A lot of these are old standbys of mine, but I hope they speak to her, too. It took me forever to finally post it, too (sorry, K!). (I don't usually include descriptions/reasonings, but I feel it's appropriate here.)Rootless Tree - We have to get the anger out of our systems early. What's more cathartic than yelling "fuck you" over and over?
Lifeline - "Broke my heart I saw it coming from the start.I think it's time I learn to swim."
Let It Die - "The saddest part of a broken heart / Isn't the ending so much as the start. / The tragedy starts from the very first spark / Losing your mind for the sake of your heart"
Dreaming with a Broken Heart - "When you're dreaming with a broken heart / Waking up is the hardest part." (This is the "waking up" stage of the mix.)
Beginning After the End - An instrumental that has the feeling that the title suggests. It's like waking up to a fresh realization.
Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe -- It's kind of condescending when you think about it, saying that the things you think are significant really aren't. But it's a healthy dose of reality: this may seem like the end of the world right now, but your life will go on.
Boys Don't Cry - From what I know, this song is the epitome of the situation at hand.
Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet? - "No I don't hate you, don't want to fight you, you know I'll always love you, but right now I just don't like you."
Thanks That Was Fun - "Deflated and jaded. I hate it when you call / (Which isn't at all) / I've spoken, though broken / Here's a token of my love"
You Learn - "I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone.you live you learn"
Just a Ride - "Accept that / There's no getting off / So live it, just gotta go with it / `cause this ride's never gonna stop"
Coconut skins - the most cathartic "la da da da"s I know of, especially when sung at top volume while speeding in your car.
I Think I Need A New Heart - Kind of an obvious sentiment, but with an upbeat disguise. Perfect for a "getting over you" mix.
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - A classic. Also, don't brood.
I'd Rather Dance With You - Not really a break-up appropriate song, but it is in my top 5 feel-good songs. You can't help but smile and dance.
Dashboard - "It would have been, could have been worse than you would ever know."
Love Loss Hope Repeat - "The seasons ought to be / Love, loss, hope, repeat" and "When we turn around and head back in / Everything will be new again."
For Now - One of the best and funniest musicals I've ever seen. "Don't stress, relax / Let life roll off your backs / Except for death and paying taxes / Everything in life is only for now."
Feedback:
The feist/mayer combo likes prime.
You're awesome, and so is this mix. Weird that you put Which to Bury, because that's on mine because of Specific Emotional Significance, but it is a relevant song. I will be constructing this in my iTunes promptly.
this is great; you're a good friend. my best friend is going through the exact same thing right now.
Also, thank you.
Nice mood arc, & an inspired "avenue q" closer.
