Comment:

Once again reaching back into the bought-but-rarely-touched segment of my cd collection, we find the Dandies, a band that's never really moved me but, for reasons hard to explain, I keep giving a shot. Their blend of flannelly Portland indie rock and Europop, shot through with huge doses of self-conscious hipsterism, generates some amusing songs and a lot of album filler. I'm not up on this whole Brian Jonestown Massacre vs. Dandy Warhols thing (and have yet to see the well-reviewed Dig movie), but I'm more squarely in the BJM camp. Still, a few touchstones of greatness here-and-there: The near-perfect indie pop (and jaw-droppingly-great video) of "Last Junkie," the awesome Kim Deal namedropping, and the theme to the truly fantastic and tragically defunct Veronica Mars show, plus a handful of other tasty nuggets. As with a lot of the second tier bands I compile, I end up liking these mixes a lot, as I can 6 rarely-played albums and cull them into 80 pretty solid minutes.

Track 7 is my favorite among these. You should certainly check out Dig...an interesting depiction of two bands' diverging paths, not to mention Anton Newcombe's lunacy.

I think I know a little more of them than the previous group, but will still dig deeper.

i second the comment about Dig. an amazing film and yeah, pretty crazy. but aside from that this is pretty excellent. i'd have added 'boys better' but it's top notch!

No matter much of a lunatic Anton Newcombe is, he's infinitely more talented and interesting than the vapidly smug Courtney Taylor. See Dig. You'll understand what I mean immediately. I'll be honest, my friend, I can't stand this band.

Unlike my pal Rob, I "dig" these guys. Sure, Courtney Taylor is a bit drab compared to the unpredictably goofy Anton Newcombe, and some of their songs drag on for days -- but when you collect their finest moments, you end up with a dandy eighty minutes of tunes. I applaud your effort! So which one of these songs served as the Veronica Mars theme?

vOv - dunno how anyone "can't standy" the dandys, but i can see how someone falls into the same category as the mixer. as a fan, i'd have to say you've missed a few good tracks here, but i'd have expected that. :) you did catch one of my favorite song titles ever "the dandy warhols love almost everyone". cheers
